Not strictly Top Of The Pops as such (although the song probably appeared in a now missing edition). Can anyone identify this song for me? I've been puzzling this one for 30 years. It was a hit in 1972 I think and contained the line;
Step up step down, till your brain is broken down, we'll walk away (or very similar). Can someone put me out of my misery??

Another line goes 'you'll tire on your feet, you will yes you will'. I remember it but title or artist escapes me. Sorry. Bit of an anthem kind of feel, like Melting Pot.

Hmmm! It might be "Shake Out The Demon" by Brewer and Shippley on Karma Sutra label (1972) H.I.D.G

Thanks or the suggestion. I'm not familiar with them. Did it get in the charts? The song i'm thinking of did. Well, it definitely got a fair bit of airplay at the time so I assume so anyway. Any reason why it might be them?

"Shake Out The Demon" I don't think made the chart - perhaps one of the chart people on MBW could say. It got a lot of airplay certainly.

Could this possibly be Journey by Duncan Brown? It was in the charts in '72 and did get featured on TOTP? I ask as it's just about the only song entry on the TOTP PasBs that I don't have any recollection of at all (i.e. all the others I know don't have those song lines in them). Just a long shot. Anybody know how Journey goes?

...the only song from '72 TOTP that I don't recognise, that is!

I've got a copy of "Journey" (great song by the way) and I'm pretty sure it doesn't contain those lyrics. I'll give it another listen later though and let you know.

I've got that song as well on a CD somewhere, and guess what - it hasn't got those words in it!! Only place on the Internet where I found the actual words for your perusal is the following site which is also for all you guitar players out there: www.angelfire.com/id/gorano/songs.journey.htmlBiographical info about Duncan Browne can be found here: www.insyncnet.com/duncan/bio.htmNo idea of where those words come from, but its probably one of those where it will be obvious once you know!!

Thank you for the leads, folks but it wasn't the Brewer and Shipley song I am afraid. I have just checked the lyrics to it on a web site and they are totally different. It takes someone with a photographic memory for song lyrics to get it. Someone out there must know what it is. arghhh. Any other suggestions?

Can you give us a few more clues? Group or solo singer? Male or female? British or foreign? Fast song or slow song? Instrumentation? Are you sure it's 1972--summer hit, maybe? BTW, I sympathise! These fragmentary songs can drive me demented!

Somebody has suggested "Step By Step" by Joe Simon. Could this be the one?

These fragmentary songs can drive me demented! Let's see..........it was played quite a bit on radio 1 and almost certainly 1972. It was more than probably a summer record. I remember it most from a coastal trip that year and the summer seems right in my memory. It was a male voice but no idea if UK or American. A fairly gutsy slightly tortured vocal but no idea if a male solo artist or group. It wasn't accoustic. Definitely a group sound. As I said before it was a similar pace, tempo and slow chugging groove to Melting Pot by Blue Mink. Also it had that kind of slowly building anthemic feel, there were slightly gospel backing vocals singing the 'you will yes you will' buts. Started off fairly stripped down but adding more instrumentation as it went on. I don't think it was Step by Step as I know that one (step by step bit by bit? yes, it's not that). I do appreciate everyone's help here. I have wondered about this for over thirty years now and it is very frustrating. It is hardest of all to pinpoint records that were probaly not quite top ten hits!!!!

I suddenly thought that another song that is similar in sound and feel and tempo to it is Drift Away by Dobie Gray. It also reminds me of it slightly of the song melodically as well. Giving you all as much to go on as I can here.
