Velvet Underground
The recent release of the Cale, Nico and Reed Paris 1972 performance on CD raises an interesting question which I hope someone will be able to answer. The show was recorded for French TV – does it still exist?

According to the Velvet Underground Handbook by M.C Kostek : "The French Government now controls this film (!!??), and despite the best efforts of the BBC, Warner Brothers, Polygram and the Foundation Cartier, too high a price is being asked for it to be released in its entirety" . It goes on to mention that it has been rebroadcast in a shortened version at least once and that short clips were included in the South Bank Show VU doc and Arsenal (which was a Spanish TV film shown on Catalonian TV3 in May 1986). So it would appear that the answer is yes, but there isnt much chance of it appearing on video soon...mind you, this book was published 11 years ago, so perhaps there might have been developments since then. Here's hoping, I'd love to see it.

This backs up something I was told recently-- a friend-of-a-friend was trying to source some 1960's French TV performances by The Soft Machine (for potential release) and was quoted a 6 figure sum as the asking price!

Would any of these Softs performances, by any chance, have been used in the recent Robert Wyatt documentary on BBC-4? I was wondering about the source of some telerecorded material used in this.

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure...the attempt to purchase rights for this stuff occcured a couple of months back, which is post-BBC4 documentary. I was wondering about the material in there too..what exactly do the Beeb have on Soft Machine?
Wonderful documentary, by the way. Wyatt's a great bloke. Should be P.M.!

I wondered about these Softs clips too. I have seen very few TV items in the past. The documentary contained two b/w t/r clips; one of them from '67 complete with lightshow and the other from about '70 / '71. I have a colour clip of them from about '71 (the time of "Four") from German TV when they were starting to go off the boil a bit. But other than that I am unaware of any more surviving material.
Is there anything of them in the BBC archives still? An important group so let's hope they are represented in some way.
