At some point over the few years, TOTP2 aired two songs from the 7-DEC-63 'It's the Beatles' special (I Want to Hold Your Hand, Twist and Shout). Anyone know the TOTP2 transmission date was for these songs? Thanks!
Best regards, John

Dear John Going by memory, I think it's possible that it could either be programmes dated 1st or 8th Jan 1964. As for those two dates "Want To Hold Your Hand" was at No 1 in B.B.C's amalgamated chart. ASM.

Dear ASM, Thanks for your kind reply. Actually, I was just hoping to identify the specific transmission date of TOTP2 broadcast (showing IWTHYH and T&S). I received a copy of this material from a friend who lived in the UK between 1999 and 2002 (so it comes from this period) but unfortunately he does not recall the exact TOTP2 air date. I suspect that the BBC may have dusted off this 12/63 footage to support the Beatles "1" promotion around late 2000. Excerpts from the two songs can be found at the TOTP2 website (Beatles microsite - videoclips), although slightly mis-dated as 5-DEC-63.
I do agree with you that the BBC likely used 'IWTHYH' from 'It's the Beatles' as the TOTP 'promo video' in January 1964.
As it's live footage of the Beatles in Liverpool 1963, it certainly is wonderful historic material. I've just been unable to find anyone who has the details of this recent TOTP2 re-airing! Thanks again.
Best regards, John McEwen USA

I've got off-air notes of all the episodes (I think) during 199-2002 and neither of those songs were played on TOTP2...

John glad I could be of some help. At the time the TOTP chart WAS NOT ! that as now used by "GUINNESS" TOTP used an amalgamation of NME , Melody Maker and Disc's charts thereby allowing the "Twist And Shout" E.P to be played as it was rising in their chart 1/1/64 they also listed the "With The Beatles" LP Really! The Record Retailer singles chart did not register EP's and was not part of the TOTP chart until 1966. This is why the TOTP 60's charts ARE NOT the same charts as "Guinness" Hope this is of interest. Thanks for your thoughts, David and ASM! The only other "clues" that might help ID/date the telecast are the onscreen graphics. At the start of the two song clip, there's an ID that states "The Beatles" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand/Twist and Shout". To the left of that ID: "TOTP" in a red oval and next to it "2" in a blue semi-circle. Interestingly, at the end of the clip it transitions to a full-screen graphic (union jack-like background) reading "Brit Pop 2". Perhaps this was a television special? Much thanks in advance for any further comments!
Best regards, John

Just out of interest, Dale Winton thing on Radio 2 today was doing the August charts from 1963 and it had the Twist & Shout EP at Number 4, just ahead of a song of the same name by Brian Poole and The Tremeloes.
Of more historical interest to me was a song entirely in Japanese at about Number 13. Obviously I can remember neither the Artist nor the Title (and it was crap) but shows the record buyer of 1963 was quite up for something a bit unusual!

The "Twist & Shout E.P was in NME MM & Disc singles charts but NOT in Record Retailers as they were still running a EP chart. It may suprise people but the chart used by "Guinness" for the 60's IS NOT the same as the chart used by the B.B.C ASM
