Thanks, Pete. Going by the old archive policy, it’s not surprising but is shocking at how far the BBC went to junk Top of the Pops, to the point of slicing the video tapes so they were unusable!!!!! It would have been much more sensible to allow them to be
reusable but as you say, the methods of dealing with programmes were so much different then.
So Brentford is the archiving location. If it wasn’t for the fire inspection, more editions may have survived to this day I still watch today's editions of Top of the Pops but there nothing like the editions of the slick Radio 1 presenters era.
I enjoy Noel Edmonds as a broadcaster but it’s a shame he wouldn’t allow any of his editions to be shown, as some performances that were performed on preceding or following weeks don't exist in many cases, like an Barry Manilow and an early Smokie song. Likewise to Mike Smith, another good broadcaster but a presenter I never expected to disallow his editions from being shown. All the 1980s editions exist, so most performances are probably covered on the UK Gold repeats of surrounding weeks.
It is good that Sweden holds some extra TOTP performances from the 1960s that the BBC doesn’t have but will the BBC ever be permitted to obtain these? Maybe SVT wants high fees or doesn’t want to sell them?
“The Kaleidoscope people also have another one of their tomes in preparation concerning music programmes on TV. It will apparently list every song ever on "TOTP" and whether it survives or not” - What a fantastic idea! I’ll look out for
Kaleidoscope when the next edition is available.
“As for the German programme "Disco" - it is shown every two weeks on Tuesday mornings on 3sat (Astra transponder 10)” - I wish it were on digital but nevermind. Fingers crossed, the BBC will eventually have access to these recordings.
