I've been wondering about this for a while, can anyone tell me why the 16/11/72 studio performance of Clair by Gilbert O'Sullivan is in Black and White ? Looks like it's on video rather than a TR ? Any ideas ?

....and a further question, I have seen the TOTP performance from 27/12/73 of 'Silence Is Golden - The Tremeloes' however on one of those extended TV Shop infomercials for 'Greatest Hits Of The 60's' they show another colour performance of Silence Is Golden, looks like a BBC performance and the band have different haircuts from their 1973 performance.... This performance doesn't seem to match up with anything in the TOTP database.
..as I think the TV Shop adverts are produced in Germany I guess they may have got the clip from the 'Disco' archives, but, would (did) the BBC ever film any specific performances just for 'Disco' ?

A version of Silence Is Golden also survives in Pop Goes The '60s (31/12/69), this is what you most likely saw.
The 16/11/72 TOTP survives as a b/w videotape copy; this was made for technical purposes I believe - hence no colour signal. A few other shows other than TOTP survive in this form too. There is an additional colour recording of Clair, surviving as just a clip.

Dear Clive I'm happy to tell you there IS a full colour copy of "Clair" This exists on ZDF archives; it is EXACTLY the same performance as the BBC held - Except! it IS in full colour. And PLEASE! before Mr Russell or Paul Vardezis wonder if I'm spreading falsies clive; I can always give you the date & Production number if you wish to buy a copy for your own personal viewing. Cheers Clive and a happy hello to all my steadfast supporters on this forum. A.S.M (Chartman)

I can also vouch for the colour performance of 'Clair'. It is exactly the same at the b&w one TOTP2 airs sometimes. I have it recorded from 'Disco'.

Dear Mike Thanks a million for confirming that the colour `Clair` exists, as the way things are I think everyone thinks I'm taking drugs on planet Zog. So it's nice to have support on at least one subject. Thanks again Mike! A.S.M

Not Clair, but does anyone recall a film special on O'Sullivan, around spring 1972. BBC, film stock with him playing songs from the first L.P. like 'matrimony' in a John Lennon style big house with french windows. He was seen walking in the garden discussing how he wrote his songs (think matrimony was based on 'chopsticks' with fingers on the riff similarly overlapped and non standard).
