It's been brought to my attention that there are some rumours flying about that there are editions of TOTP thought to be missing which are actually at the BBC.
I'm sorry to say that this is totally untrue.

I am sorry Edward you are wrong! Both Oct and Nov 1971 have been witnessed by someone of impeccable credentials. It is no rumour but quite valid. If you care to tell me why you refute it, I would be most interested. Yours Best Regards A.S.M Smith.

Chartman,
Whilst it's easy for you to criticise and say someone is wrong, perhaps you'd be good enough to offer some actual evidence?
I can only find records of promo films for the dates you talk about; whilst it's entirely possible that some new uncatalogued material has been found, there is no evidence that it's at the BBC yet. In future please moderate your posts and maybe throw in the odd fact. Saying that someone with impeccable credentials has seen something means nothing when it is not them posting and we don't know who it is.
Best regards,
Paul

Paul. Please stop bieng so nasty. Keith Badman when he was invited to a meeting with Chris Cowie and archive staff at the B.B.C was "SHOWN" those two TOTP Shows. ACTUALLY SHOWN them. SO PLEASE moderate your put downs please . I joined this forum for sensible debate; if you disagree with something there is no need for the PETE SEATON school of response THANK YOU! CHARTMAN.

Hi ASM Smith.
Firstly, I am not being nasty, I am doing my job here of moderating you being nasty about Edward Russell. If you're not a little bit more diplomatic about things in the future you'll just come across as a sourpuss.
Secondly, if you had pointed out your evidence the first time round as a polite correction to Edward, who despite working for the BBC is just going by the archive listing (which I have checked and he is correct), then we may have been able to get into a constructive discussion. Instead, you're slagging him off and now you're doing the same to me.
Whilst I'm pleased you've clarified the situation, all it is telling us is that you have second hand information about a meeting you weren't at and specifically, we don't have the actual dates of the editions you are talking about, nor knowledge of the content. However, as Keith has posted here before, I'm sure he would be only too pleased to confirm or deny what you've said, after all it could be you that's got the wrong end of the stick.
Best regards,
Paul

Dear Paul Thank you for replying. I was not bieng sharp to Shaun; I stated he was wrong; which sadly is not the first time regarding Keith Badman. He had stated keith did not have particular music clips in the past. I have seen these I swear to it! Keith and I spoke by phone last night (He is a CLOSE friend) Paul I assure you he has seen TOTP Oct/ Nov 71. Shaun I'm afraid is wrong, I'm not trying to be hurtful honestly.Paul did you also know that for a long time many at the B.B.C said NO colour clips of Badfinger or Pickettywitch existed. Luckily when i spoke to Andrew Martin at archives he went and watched them for himself as they were held at a different part of archives. Paul I assure you I am not trying to fill up Forum with wild rumours. Keith WAS shown these tapes and he will confirm it. I apologise if I annoyed you but Keith & I both feel TOTP fans should know of this. Hope to hear back from you. All the best A.S.M Smith (Chartman)

Dear Paul I re-read my first reply to Edward Russell. I said "I'm sorry Edward you are wrong"! Gosh paul I'm sorry, but was that really so harsh? IF you feel thats slagging someone off I will readily leave the forum. I have NO intention of hurting Edward; If he feels my reply to him was that bad I will readily apologise more than I do now- SORRY EDWARD.

Whilst I wouldn't be surprised at all if a lot more lost TOTP material is out there, I agree we do need first-hand evidence of it to be able to retrieve anything.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has any theories, comments or leads on the TOTP colour material from late 1969 and 1970 that found it's way onto the web a while back. I downloaded these clips myself and are actual proof of much missing material existing somewhere.
It would be good if the source of these could be located and copies taken. It's a particular era of TOTP that's under-represented in the archives.

Thanks Paul, for stepping in while I was enjoying the delights of R.E.M. in Dublin! To ASM Smith, the point of this post was to clear up the rumour that several people have been spreading about that these episodes exist at the BBC and are being ignored. They do not. I consulted widely with the BBC's Archive department and indeed 2 people from the Treasure Hunt appeal before posting this news. Can I please ask ASM Smith to cease from spreading this false rumour any further as it is taking attention away from genuine leads.

Hi Chartman.
Nobody wants you to leave the forum; far from it.
Equally, this is a place where I think we would all like a reasoned exchange of views. Perhaps you weren't slagging Edward off, but the tone was a little confrontational. At the end of the day, we all want to see more material rediscovered and returned to the archives so we can all get to see it. I think it's very good that Edward, Dick Fiddy and the other people from the various broadcast organisations come here to look at the threads and sometimes take part in debates. The last thing I want is for them to feel this isn't a place they can come to without being criticised unduly. For the record, I know the BBC is not trying to hide from the general public material it has in their archive; it is simply not in their interest, so all I'm asking for is proper debate and sharing of information for mutual benefit, not confrontation.
Cheers,
Paul

Dear Paul and Edward Keith Badman Told me he was shown those reels while at his meeting with Chris Cowie et al at the B.B.C. Keith has NEVER missled me yet, so I believe him. Do you say I should not? Paul; Edward (According to Keith) had poured cold water on clips Keith claimed existed; Edward said no. Paul I HAVE SEEN THEM; THEY EXIST! I'm sorry but Edward with all due respect is not ! 100% correct all the time. I do not wish to hurt any feelings but I have to stand by keith. I also know of some rare top of the pops clips which I will list this afternoon. If Edward would like to comment on them I shall be happy to see what he says. Best wishes no harm intended A.S.M(Chartman)
