40 years are nearly up.
Any thoughts on the carve up?
Companies changing notepaper headings or major differences?
One aspect I note is that from 66 onwards the companies were obsessed with what they were going to produce when the new franchises were awarded.
Pop and children's shows seem to have suffered in the run up. e.g. RSG! and Thank Your Lucky Stars were shelved.
Was Thames merely ABC mark 2?
Were the shows by the new companies markedly different or would the average viewer have not noticed the difference?

There wasn't a huge difference between Rediffusion and Thames (the weekday contractors), to my mind. Just cosmetic. Nor was there much difference between ATV London and it's weekend successor LWT (both being quite glitzy but also capable of gritty drama). The idents changed and some series and faces bowed out for good (to be replaced by others in the same vein, albeit with different titles!), timeslots were juggled about a bit but it was business as usual. To be honest, I liked Thames and what they produced (particularly in the first ten or so years) but Rediffusion should not have gone, by rights, and i'd have preferred it if they hadn't as they had a proven track record. Same goes for ABC.

It gave us 'From London Weekend' - for which I am pleased.

My local ITV company was TWW - Television West and Wales - and they lost the franchise to the Harlech consortium (headed by Lord Harlech) which became known as HTV.
As I recall the Harlech group made much of saying they would build their own studios, and wouldn't take over TWW's, but in the event the TWW studios on the Bath Rd in Bristol simply changed the sign to 'HTV'.

Did you see the recent 50 years of tww series? It was all from a Welsh perspective not a Bristol one. Was there any rivalry between Cardiff and Bristol or did they get on well, with staff swapping studios from time to time?
