I am doing research on the Miss World Contest, which started in 1951. Although, I don't think the BBC started televising the event until 1954. How many Miss World contests exist between 1954 - 1972 ?

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for replying to my Miss World question. I have another question for you ? Does the BBC contain film material in their archives from the Miss United Kingdom contest ? I believe, the BBC started televising that contest from 1966 onwards. However, I remember some years ago, I watched a programme on Michael Aspel, and it featured B/W footage, when he compered the Miss UK contest.

The holdings for Miss United Kingdom are:
1968 - complete b/w film recording plus b/w VT insert of the titles and the swimwear section. 1969 - titles and 'lights' sequence only, 16mm b/w film 1973-1979 inclusive - complete programmes on colour VT

Hi Andrew, you might be able to answer this. Although, the BBC hold a complete B/w recording of Miss World 1969, was there ever a colour recording of this programme ? In an edition of the RT from 1969, it mentions that MW was being televised in colour for the first time that year. Does any colour clips survive in the BBC archives ? I am almost certain, that I spotted (only a few years ago on a programme featuring MW) a colour clip of the crowning of MW 1969 and it looked like it was taken from the BBC broadcast!! What do you think ?
Also, can any one tell me which episode from Whicker's World in the Sixties featured the Miss World Contest ? Something tells me it was broadcast in 1965.

Hi Jonny, yes Miss World 1970 is famous for the disruption of the contest involving protesters.
Bob Hope's comments on stage at MW 1970, "that he was happy to be at this cattle market and that he was checking out the calfs backstage", only helped to make things worst. He was six minutes into his act, before the protesters threw flour bombs and leaflets. There had been threats to disrupt that year's contest.
Bob hope, looked rather nervous, when he returned on stage to crown the new Miss World, Jennifer Hosten from Grenada.

Yes, the 1969 contest was broadcast in colour (colour having started officially on BBC1 on 15/11/69) and there is an existing colour clip of the crowning, part of a compilation logged under the 1973 contest (presumably they were doing a retrospective as part of that year's contest). Whicker's World tx'd 13/11/65 "What's a Pretty Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This" was about beauty contests including Miss World.

Hi Jonny, I didn't see that programme "1969 - those were the days" which featured an ex-beauty queen. I'm sorry, I missed it, because there's not that much footage available of beauty contests in the Sixties.
I seem to remember that Miss World contestants made brief appearances on TOTP in the ealy Seventies. Do you recall this ?
