It's Murder! - But Is It Art? which is from 1972 and starred Arthur Lowe, I seem to have a vague recollection of it , but does it survive? As it's never been featured on any programmes about Arthur, such as Unforgettable, Reputations or Life On The Box...

I was only thinking about this show last week - in one scene Arthur Lowe's character is trying to telephone Dudley Foster's, who is trying to ring Arthur's - so they both get the engaged tone. However, when one hangs up, the phone then immediately rings so that they are connected! Even with today's modern telephones, that wouldn't happen! I also seem to remember that an airplay hit from Pick of The Pops at the time was "Don't Say You Do" by a group called Worth, and I believe that they featured in one episode in a club scene.
Dudley was a marvellous light comedy/character actor, very sad that he committed suicide the following year, following the death of his father.

Thanks for your memories there Jeff, all I seem to remember is been allowed to stay up late to watch it (I was probably only 5 at the time LOL), though the phone scene does seem to ring some bells... I have a link from my Dad's Army website www.atud42.dsl.pipex.com/radiotimes/rt_1972182403_art.htm which reproduces the radio times article and some pictures from the show.

thanks for the link - I don't know which PoTP edition, but I suspect a couple of shows from either late 71, or more likely, early 72 - can't be any more precise. I'm afraid I didn't tape it, so can't give it better context.
