I wonder if someone could help me? I'm producing a DVD on a Lotus Formula 1 car and need to find out if the BBC (or ITV) transmitted any footage from the Italian Grand Prix of 1970. The race was on the 6th September, but I'm interested in footage from practice the day before. I have found some B&W footage on youtube, but that is from ORF in Austria. The footage would have, I think, been originatted by RAI in Italy. I am in the process of contacting both companies archives. Can anyone help me with the UK side of things? Cheers.

Apparemtly the BBC only have 1966 and 1971 - nothing in between.
however LWT did a show called GRAND PRIX NIGHT WITH MURRAY WALKER around 1997 which of course was rich with archive clips. which might help?

hi hartley, thanks indeed for your swift reply. Do you mean Monza 1966 and 1971?

Excellent, thanks indeed Gary. Looks like ITN only shot their stuff on race day then.

Looks like British/Belgium for 1966
Resident BBC sage Andrew Martin will know, if he reads this or you contact through a PM.
ITN also have a short news item for the 27/11/70 but you may only get a few seconds of the GP on this - if the date tallys.

The record from the ITN database is not ITN material it's from the Reuters/Visnews collection that they licence. It would have been available to any broadcasters to screen at the time.
Sunday Grandstand 6 September 1970 had the Italian Grand Prix although this was probably just a feed via Eurovision of Italian TV who would have been the broadcaster/copyright holder.
World of Sport on the previous day had something called Grand Prix View but this could have just been a studio preview perhaps with a telephone interview with someone on the spot or possible another Italian TV feed. They wouldn't have sent a film camera all that way. These are the days before 24 hour round the clock sport on TV although looking at the schedules there does seem to be quite a lot on back in 1970!

I've just realised the significance of the practice for the Grand Prix over the race - it was when Championship leader Jochen Rindt was killed.
Reuters is your best bet for this. A quick search under his name on ITN Archive pulls up a Visnews report for syndication from the day of the practice. It's mostly library footage but does include shots of Rindt's wrecked Lotus which judging from the description come from a Eurovision telerecording.

The only footage the BBC appears to have is also a news story from 5/9/70 about the crash, nothing from before that day though. If you contact BBC Motion Gallery they should be able to arrange a copy for commercial use.

ITV Sport may have just shown the Italian TV feed but at least if they showed it, they may still have it on tape which a large part of the battle! There were also people in those days who went to such events with film cameras for both ITV & BBC, as well as for sponsors and constructors so it's not impossible someone may have been there with a film camera which would not have gone out the following day. Try someone like Andrew Marriott on www.pitlanepro.com/.

Yes, well spotted sherwood, that's the reason for my interest in footage from the day before the race. I have interviewed Emerson Fittipaldi & John Miles (the other two Lotus drivers present at Monza that day) and also former Team Lotus Team Manager Peter Warr (also present) and they all talk in-depth about the weekend and their thinking about Jochen's accident. Thanks everyone else for the info-- excellent!!

I don't know if this programme would be of any help in your research but the BBC did a motor sport review programme for 1970 'Winners at the Wheel' during the 1st week of 71.
