Does this BBC production exist in the archives? I saw it at the time and thought it was good. The cast is exceptional and Sarah Sutton made a good Alice.

It still exists, in both the original broadcast version and - I think - an edited repeat version. As I recall, the production was largely made on 16mm film, but after 33 years my memory is hazy on this. I wish the BBC would release it on DVD. It would make a fine double bill with Jonathan Miller's 'Alice in Wonderland' (already released by the BFI).

It does indeed exist, and in both versions. The original 75 minute version was first tx'd 25/12/73, the 66 minute edited version was shown on 27/12/74 and 25/12/76 (this was a version made as an entry for the Italia Prize). I'm not sure there was any film in it though - or very little. All the Looking Glass scenes feature actors CSO'd onto artwork backgrounds.

I've checked the paperwork, and there were exactly 19 feet of film in the production, which is about 30 seconds, and there were no artists appearing on film. The programme was made on tape, entirely in studio, the film content was presumably graphics or some other special effect. (The Radio Times article featured members of the cast in costume at some kind of stately home location, but this must have been set up specially by RT as it's not in the programme, unless (and I can't remember) stills were used in the CSO sequences?)
