Hi people
Two Jazz 625 shows are on ebay at the moment. The BBC had 'indicated' to us to bid on them so they could be returned, because they are very likely missing.
However, I am not prepared to pay the huge amount of money that they are now fetching. I would have gone to £150 each, but I'm not going over the £200 mark.
I hope that someone off this forum is the higher bidder and will return them, or perhaps someone far wealthier than I can afford to buy them.
Its a real shame, I like jazz, I like missing stuff returned, but ebay has created a climate of rare telly being sold for huge sums, and these shows are not worth the money. I dont blame the sellers, I blame us poor people who have paid £700 for a missing show in the past. We all need our heads looking at when there are starving children in Africa.
Anyway, lets hope someone else has deep pockets, the BBC will be very grateful.

I'm not a jazz fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it's sad they will almost certainly go the USA.
They pay crazy money and there are loads of people willing to pay the dosh.
It's sad because the Dr No nature of fans means it'll be watched by one person only - the buyer!

Hi Chris,
I dipped into Infax at the BBC Motion Gallery and I believe that both of these shows are present in the archive. I stand to be corrected though. Just a thought before anyone parts with their cash.
LLV5268N JAZZ 625 Oct. 10, 1964 - Oscar Peterson
LLMA444P JAZZ 625 Apr. 21, 1965 - Thelonius Monk

There were 3 Oscar Peterson appearances, only 1 reel from 1 show exists.
Thelonius Monk were on twice, only one appearance survives.
As for the BBC buying material - a) its a dangerous precedent as every Tom, Dick and Harriet would expect dosh b) there is no budget at the BBC to buy anything c) I don't want my licence fee spent on buying old shows from 1961, I want it spent on programmes now :-) I like old shows, but its not a priority for the BBC in today's money-lean world. Could you justify buying an old BP petrol can from the 1960s if you were an oil executive today?
When the BBC 'indicate' suggestions to us they do so because the archivists have a love of the old material, but their bosses at White City do not share the same passion and vision, they deal in hard cash and ratings. :-(

Thanks for clearing that up Chris. I thought that you'd know better than anyone if they were missing. Good luck with the bidding.

Come On Guys, We all Jump for joy whenever anything is found, but will people actually follow through on their thoughts, and help a good cause return some lost gems to the BBC archives. At least then, viewers and license payers have the opportunity to actively help the BBC Archivists preserve a slice of jazz history for future generations, and who would they have to thank for this act of generosity, the fans, the license payers. As the broadcasters had no choice to make room for new items, these were once thought lost among the BBC junkings. Which have been discussed to no end of late, that they had to do what they did. At least there are chances like this, to put some of these gaps away, and bring two pieces of quality Jazz entertainment back onto British, and hopefully a larger audience of Jazz and music lovers. I would be willing to help Chris Perry at Kaleidoscope obtain these, as they really should not be allowed to disappear, may never have another chance like this again. Will anyone else step up to he plate, and have a swing at saving some lost BBC TV reels ? Here is a you-tube Appearance of Wes Montgomery - 'Round Midnight - (Thelonious Monk) on Jazz 625: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAtNJdnaEGYWes Montgomery - Yesterdays - Jazz 625 www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZI3VPVv2VIAren't we glad these still exist ? Lets make sure there are some new additions to this series holdings at the BBC. Or if we do not win thses reels, possibly the winning bidder would relent to loaning the reels to the BBC ? Fingers crossed, and hope to see more Jazz 625 footage back in the archives, from so long ago. Hopefully, we will make a Home Run ! Cheers All, Lance.

These items MUST indeed be returned and I hope that the bids are successful.
I'm shocked and dismayed such items can be sold on eBay where indeed they could end up on the shelf of one wealthy collector and never be enjoyed again by anybody else.
Jazz 625 was a pioneering show that influenced many musicians - quite a few rock musicians for certain... Also, just think, if back at the BBC they can potentially still make money back by licensing these shows or clips from them, so I can't see why this would actually be making a loss for the BBC. It would be an even bigger loss to the BBC and fans worldwide if they vanish...

I bet the American guy who found the Edward D Wood films in the 1980s never worried about the content?, just got on with the job of letting the world see them and making a bit for himself in the process.

So far, 6 different people have expressed interest in this thread. Why not club an equal amount of £75 to £150 each and have one bidder use the resulting money?

The 6 people's grandads already paid for it with their licence fee in 1965. I'll tell you what. if the BBC buys it . I'll buy the DVD --or my Sky subscription will pay for a viewing of it.

Hah Ha anyway A nice diversionary shot Andy, but its a case kettle calling pot black eh? In the past you have said exactly the same thing to people bidding on YOUR items ;D LOL
I am quite aware of the masonic type world of smoke and mirrors of film collecting thank you . Chris Perry comes here sometimes with a little tease about something then (usually ignoring responses to said item)disappears for weeks . Yesterday he suddenly comes back and says " please bid" . In other words he was not prepared to mention it here in the early stages but now wants everybody to drop tools and open their wallets.
Suddenly we are people again eh?

The person that suffers financially is the naive good guy trying to do his bit for history while the TV companies and street wise collectors just laugh at him while they take his money. Oh yes and of course the film goes back on the merry go round again.

Just seen this thread. Despite being broke at the moment, I'd happily join any consortium to buy these. Anyone interested?
