A couple of questions regarding this pre-Goodies series:
1. I understand that 8 and a half minutes worth of film sequences exist from this series. Which episodes are they from and what do they consist of?
2. I have seen a caption card for the show on the site The TV Room. Any ideas where this is from?
Any help would be appreciated.

The surviving footage from Broaden Your Mind is on the Goodies DVD release. It amounts to a couple of short sketches and one long one. Not sure which episodes they come from though - anyone?
It's a shame that this is all that survives visually (off-air audios are in existence although I havn't heard them) as the humour is of a similar style to that in the then-current Marty series and would stand up well now, I think. A real loss.

The "Alternative Royal Family" sketch is from Series 2, Episode 5 (15/12/69).
It said Terry Jones also has Jone/Palin (film?) extracts, and the "Singing Dogs" from Series 2 Episode 6. (22/12/69).

All the sketches on the Goodies DVD are from the same episode (2.5). And the Singing Dogs is in The Goodies episode Kitten Kong (Special 1).
Didn't realise Terry Jones had the singing dogs. Why? It has nothing to do with him. Jim Franklin shot those in his backyard, after giving his dogs some toffees to chew.
Also the other visual sequences refered to that Jones has are from "Twice A Fortnight", not "Broaden Your Mind". You'd have thought he'd have put them as an extra on a Python DVD by now, wouldn't you?
I know of at least 2 people who made off-air audio recordings of BYM, one in the UK and the other in Australia. I've heard the Australian off-airs myself. The humour is a kind of stylistic bridge between ISIRTA and The Goodies, ie. full of those old-style wordy jokes but with lots of visual stuff too.

Regarding the caption card, I would imagine this comes from a tape of BBC1 continuity announcements from one of the first nights of colour on BBC1...it's pointing out that "Broaden Your Mind" is starting over on BBC2...in fact, I think it is described as a new series, so it must be the first episode.

Well that's Robert Ross for you innit? "The Complete Goodies" - page 36. Hmm...I tend not to believe Robert Ross on these things because his book on The Goodies is so full of mistakes. However, it is possible that Jones kept hold of the sketch that he and Palin did for BYM (episode 1.4? A sketch called Man Island?). Ross once told me that he had a curry at Jones' house. Perhaps somewhere between the tandoori and the kulfi Jones told Ross that he had this BYM sketch somewhere. Which makes me wonder whether Ross asked for a copy or when Jones is going to release all this stuff rotting away in his attic on DVD or whether Jones is aware of how interesting this stuff is to people like us. I would be more inclined to believe Ross' claim that Jones has this BYM sketch if Ross had said as much in his Python book. If someone has this book to hand I'd be much oblidged if they could check this out.

There was talk earlier in the year that a whole BYM episode was back with the BBC as a b/w telerecording but I've never seen confirmation of this anywhere.
Ross also mentions that a sketch appears in a 1969 BBC2 christmas compilation called something like "Company of Comedy" but he doesn't then say if it still exists and again no-one else has yet confirmed it to me one way or another.
I was told recently that some mute footage of Twice a Fortnight has turned up on the end of a reel, and that it might end up on a forthcoming Ripping Yarns DVD release but nothing is certain. Am I right in assuming that there are audios of TAF in circulation? I think Roger Wilmut mentions hearing them in "From Fringe to Flying Circus" (a book which Ross should have taken a few lessons from).

Yes, there are audios of the whole series apparently. So any visual material that turns up could in theory be matched to this. It would be good if a whole edition surfaced but I haven't heard of this myself. The frustration I find with a lot of the possible leads on missing material is that you never get to hear the outcome of them.
