ROLF HARRIS QUERY
I was really starting this thread to see if anyone knows about the sources for various Rolf Harris 60s and 70s clips I've seen; mainly on 'TV Heroes' (Danny Baker c. 1993).
The following appeared:
B+W clip 'Sun arise'. This looks from the original period 1960 - 62 and like a Rolf Harris show. It's a slightly blurred T-R which looks like a 'viewing copy'.
'Tie me kangaroo down' - With the Young generation. I'm sure this is from a 'Rolf Harris show' from 1967 returned from overseas sales in the late 1980s.
'Jake the Peg' - Rolf dressed in Mac with extra false middle leg. though intended as a bit of fun the leg always looked realistic and I didn't get it at the time and still find it bizarre. this is probably why it sticks in the mind. theres another ITV show I think on tape in which he does this; similar period which has been used (unless its one the later BBC colour reels).
'Two little Boys' - Colour 'promo' film with him on battlefield walking with a horse. Someone recalled this as being a specially shot promo they used to show on TOTP from the time it was mainly a hit (Jan. 1970). However EMI didn't seem to know of a promo when I queried this; and there's nothing listed under the TOTP insert films; unless it was made for general use and shown in 'The Rolf Harris Show' ? Does anyone know?
Clip with accordian - looks like the 1969 BBC series on B+W T - R; can't recall which song.
The following material was also used:
Rolf Harris and Coojee bear (actor in full size costume). It was a regular character based on a cuddly toy of a Koala bear; and I recall really liking it c. 1966. the clip is a B+W T-R and looks c. 1966 - 67.
Rolf Harris and audience - Rolf painting a scene with house paint brush and asking the audience to work out what it whilst humming 'pum - pum - pum - pahh' style to himself. (B+W T-R).
Rolf Harris and audience - painting something; one I recall actually from the time of a fence going back in perspective over a hill, and similar one of wildlife (an elephant). I saw this at the time c. 1970 round a friends in colour and it seems to survive on colour VT.
Rolf Harris with audience of children, painting again. I think this is 'Rolf on Saturday - O.K.' which i think began on BBC around 1974 - 76, though may be earlier - 1971?
The following Rolf Harris has been quoted to not exist for various reasons:
TOTP appearances.
1960s BBC shows (bar 1962 - 64 period, 69 and 67 oddments).
For that period there's also a 'Two little Boys' from ITV show on colour VT. This seems to be a performance from the period it was at the top of the charts and he guested in person on TOTP and in similar fashion he looks tearful during the last 'anti war' / sentimental verse.
I recall a TOTP which billed at the start (for some reason) a collective of multi stars (and commenting to my Mum at the time. The billing was Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Rolf Harris and Cilla Black. The end shot had the Johnnie Spencer sitting on high stool silhouette logo and I seem to think the Dusty hit was 'Son of a Preacher man' one of only two hits which I recall well by her (the other being 'You don't have to say you love me' c. 1966).
Theres the infamous 'learn to swim' Rolf Public info film (c. 70 - 73) which was so as on the original prints pre 1975, two boys behind him jump up shouting and laughing after he waves goodbye with a toe and push his head under the water. Later prints freeze frame on his toe waving goodbye.
Theres the Rolf harris Stylophone advert (1970).
There also appears to be the Rolf Harris 'Cadburys buttons' advert; sometime between 1967 and 70.
this turned up on the Thames Technicians tape copies for years 1978 - 79 which was floating around many years ago. Obviously this was in one of the ITV Archives at that time; whether it would be now is debateable; but I wonder why it was still there after all that time? Whether they had compiled a tape insert reel of old adverts to play in between shows that had survived from c. 1970 and if so, what else was on it?
