For those brought up by wartime generation parents Britain was bound in a convention still in the late 1950s and early 1960s; where much of the media and information they received would be by radio rather than TV.
I clearly recall now this was where I often heard Pop records rather than on 'Top of the Pops'. Only thinking back do I realise how instrumental radio was in my information processes.
Thus, 'Ready Steady Go' (my sisters favourite) on ITV; is matched by recollections of hearing radio in 1963 - 64 play a mixture of new hits and records from the 1960 period by Adam Faith, Elvis and Motown type groups. And my most resounding memory though I do seem to recall them on TOTP too; 'The Righteous Brothers' You've lost that loving feeling booming out of radiogram; evocative memory.
I didn't see many of the acclaimed TOTP performances of Hendrix or the Small Faces, I'd largely hear them o n the Radio. My dad still in 1970 would have Radio 4 on 'The Archers' and 'The World at One' rather than the TV at lunchtimes. One advantage was you could have it in the kitchen while making lunch and move it from room to room.
