The BBC 1965 series of Sherlock Holmes that starred Douglas Wilmer has been cover in an early thread on this forum
<Two episodes of the Douglas Wilmer series in the BBC archives are incomplete - "The Abbey Grange" is missing the first reel of two, "The Bruce-Partington Plans" is missing the second reel of two. Technically "The Speckled Band" is incomplete, in that it was first transmitted in "Detective" and all episodes of that series (its first series) had an introduction by Rupert Davies (as Maigret) - the version that exists of "Speckled Band" has the "Sherlock Holmes" series titles and is minus the intro. >
Since its more troubled by incompleteness rather than been fully wiped!
With that in mind could I ask, does anyone know if the missing episodes from the 1968 series
09/09/68 The Second Stain
23/09/68 The Dancing Men
21/10/68 The Greek Interpreter
28/10/68 The Naval Treaty
04/11/68 Thor Bridge
11/11/68 The Musgrave Ritual
18/11/68 Black Peter
25/11/68 Wisteria Lodge
02/12/68 Shoscombe Old Place
09/12/68 The Solitary Cyclist
That starred Peter Cushing in the lead role were wiped since they were made on 2" Colour Videotape. Some forums state that the series was also shown in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Would these have been shown from 2” Quad masters made for this market?
Did the U.S market ever get this series in NTSC on standards converted tapes from the original PAL tapes?
Any information would be great, thanks

Gosh is there only me that cares about his, what a cheak indeed Maybe people just don't know the answer. I believe the Cushing 'Holmes' were sold to Australia but I don't know if they were sent b/w film recordings or colour video copies. When did Australian TV start broadcasting in colour? I've no idea about US or Canadian sales. Years ago, there was an article in 'Cinefantastique' magazine about a US fan trying to track down the episodes. He didn't have much luck. To be honest, I doubt the missing episodes exist anymore, in any format.

I have read reports that all the Cushing Holmes episodes are held in Germany, presumably with redubbed soundtracks. Whether there are any copies of the original audio I do not know. The series was very popular there.
These apparently came to light at the same time as the missing Paul Temples were located there, also with German lanuage sound. These were co-produced by the BBC and one of the German broadcasters which may explain their survival.

Can you expand on the reports you have read as this would seem to cast new light on this area with regards too Missing!

See here for some details: www.the-mausoleum-club.org.uk/xmb/viewthread.php?tid=9714There was some other stuff at Roobarbs IIRC which dealt with Paul Temple and this too. R E Faust

If I read the information correctly, these particular episodes still existed in Germany until at least 1974. Which prompts the question: were they later junked on the spot, returned to the BBC for disposal or could they still exist in some German TV vault? Maybe I'm naive, but I assume the BBC would have looked into this possiblity, especially after the 'Paul Temple' recovery. German-dubbed 'Holmes' wouldn't be ideal but it's infinitely preferable to nothing at all.
