Well, presumably the horror serial would have been recorded at the time, so really theres as good a chance of it being out there or terminally lost as anything. I havent heard any particularly convincing rumours about this one, although there have been a couple. Im sure this one would be something most people would love to see come back. I would really love to see how they satirised quatermass. It HAS to be good!

I can say, having seen the programme back in February 1959, it WAS good.

It is not far off fifty years ago since I watched this particular show. However, the following is roughly what I remember.
A notable feature was at the start of the show when, instead of Tony Hancock's usual introduction, there is a picture of a mock-up of one of the creatures from the 'Q' serial and the voice of Valentine Dyall saying the introduction with a subsequent a manic laugh.
Hancock is found sitting in the living room staring at the wall with a blunderbus, if I remember correctly. In comes Sid James to witness Hancock who seems be on the point of firing. Sid wonders what its all about and Hancock's reply is something like the following: "If you had been watching the final episode tonight along with all the previous episodes instead of down at the pub you would know. Sid, you don't know what it was like. I'm telling you I'm prepared in case one of 'em comes through the wall. "
Sid in reply says "If one of them comes through the wall it will get a punch up the bracket from me."
Anyway, Hancock (seeing himself as another Prof Q) decides to dig the garden and finds something metallic in the garden and immediately believes it to be a Martian space capsule. However, his neighbour, played by Arthur Mullard, decides to call in the Army, the officer being played by none other than John Le Mesurier. What ensues is a contest between the Army bomb disposal officer and Hancock.
No prizes for guessing who comes second.
Yours,

I remember seeing it - the only bit that comes back to mind (I was 10) is when they find the UXB it has 'Achtung' written on the side of it, which Hancock maintains is Martian for 'Acton'. He then goes into some pompous techno-babble about orbits (and going past Venus ? ?) and saying something along the lines of " ... considering all that distance they weren't far out really !"
A much better spoof than the Goons Red Capsule IMHO.

The audio soundtrack exists,a couple of friends in collecting circles have it,so at least we can enjoy it in audible form.

Yes, I have heard that there are audios of some missing Hancocks. I had been told that they are a bit on the lo-fi side though. Anyone heard them to comment on that?

Ild love to get a chance to spruce up some of the HHH misiing Tv shows. The prob is that most ive heard is that the playback deck's head's are not properly aligned with the one made for the recording. so most sound a bit off. and the fact we are hering 4 or 8th gen copies . each copied on various formats and machines each with its own probs (like muliple copies with mis aligned heads) which makes for very very LO-FI Copies.. Hell if anyone can point me to the original Reels (which I would only need for very short Time) We could have somthing nice. But not in these "enlightend" times where every charlie is a "audio expert" but none have golden ears !!!

Check out the following link, and send a message to Dan Peat, letting him know of your good intensions... As they (the THAS) are probably the most likely source (having directly returned to the BBC many lost Hancock shows, over the years) of the best possible copies for clean up purposes - or at least, the best source to put you in touch, with the original sources... www.tonyhancock.org.uk/contacts.html
