Hello All,
As you know I have been researching for missing items of UK TV. I have made contact with an individual who used to work at the BBC back in the late 1970's. He had an interesting story to tell, so I thought I would share it with you. He requested no names be used in this article. Enjoy:
About a month ago I was put into contact with an individual who used to work at the BBC back in the 1970's. I thought I would ask about the junkings and lost films. He replied to me stating that he used to work in a room that bulk erased the original BBC VT master tapes. At the time he considered that they might be destroying unique material. Thus he got a piece of tape and wrote "Do Not Erase Ever" on the reel and placed it back for re-cataloging. However there were 50 other rooms operating erasure machines, not all would of done such a thing. One important series that he saved from the magnetic erasure were original BBC VT tapes of Dad's Army ! Fans of the series today can have acts like this to thank for that saved many episodes from destruction.
Just thought fans and everyone else should hear of this tale that has now just been divulged. Hope you enjoyed .
Lance.

When I worked in Current Ops at TVC in the 80's I saved a few things; studio recordings of Blackadder II on 1" etc. I eventually got them dubbed to VHS and chucked the 1" masters. Of course, now I can't even find the VHS!! D'oh!

Later, a virtually full set was recovered from NZ and Australia.

Thats OK Gary. I am sure you will find them someday. Check behind the TV set or by the couch always seem to be where these things hide.

Its a shame you can not find them and that they could not have been dubbed on to S-VHS as this would have been better for viewing today. If you could find that too like!!!!!!

I would have had them dubbed in about 1987 I think.

Hope they are not in the fridge, they would not last too long if they were, way too much moisture. That is good you found your wallet though Vinylman, some cool cash to spend.

I would have had them dubbed in about 1987 I think. Thats 20 years ago. I have a few VHS tapes that are 20 years old and they do play back ok. S-VHS was not around in 1987, did you have the ability to play back 1" c-type tapes before you dubbed it to VHS? Its a shame both are currently 'lost' along with the original studio tape! If you don't mind me asking have you ever had a full search for this recording?

'did you have the ability to play back 1" c-type tapes before you dubbed it to VHS?' Yes, when I was at work!
