Look, I know this exists, but.... wait a tick....

These are off-airs from ABC (Australia) in 1978 as part of a run of Pertwee episodes of Doctor Who that were re-run then.
So, a few clips over two uploads of what I'm informed are episodes of Day of the Daleks which were first shown over here in 1972.

This does prove that people Down Under were using home videos in 1978 - and I also have a NON-DW off-air home taped recording of a comedy from 1975.
While I suspect these years doesn't probably cover repeats of wiped Hartnells or Troughtons, it at least proves that some DW recordings are still showing up - even if they're not the missing ones.

Sadly, wiped Hartnells and Troughtons weren't still being repeated there after the mid-70s.

Australian home recordings did manage to capture some stuff wiped at home - e.g. the two missing It Ain't Half Hot Mum episodes from the first series.

The prospect of finding an off-air recording of the original version of Kitten Kong is fairly good, given that it apparently last aired on the ABC in 1981.

Interesting thing about It Ain’t Half Hot Mum is that to two off air episodes that exist are a recording of a Channel 7 repeat post 1989 going by the Channel 7 logo after each ad break. IAHHM was originally shown on the ABC in the late 70s/early 80s now if we could find a ABC off air recording the episodes would probably be complete as there are no ads on the ABC.

The series also had a repeat run on Channel 10 in the 90s. Although that would be cut with commercials but it’s possible they had different ad breaks than Channel 7.

My Dad is a big fan of IAHHM, I can remember watching it on all three stations over the years. Shame he never recorded it!

These Day of the Daleks clips on the ABC are some of my earliest memories of Doctor Who. I would have been watching these very episodes as a 4 year old with my older brother and sister. Thank you for sharing.

We do know that there was at least one person in Australia who did home recordings of Troughton - Evil onwards was what was determined IIRC - but it was thrown out by the family (the oft-mentioned Melbourne Hoarder)

It was the follow-up podcast by 42 to Doomsday IIRC (Ep 113 All Aboard With The Hoard doing a quick search), though it's a few months since I listened to it so couldn't provide quotes.

OK, thanks. The collection was split to be catalogued by two universities, and one private individual. No complete missing episode of anything has been found yet, but the university groups have not had time to replay much on the tapes, and there are many thousands of recordings. It will be a lot of work getting playback from them, though it's likely most will be playable. The earliest video recordings are from 1969. The odd episode of missing Doctor Who is possible, or anything else shown on Melbourne television from that date onwards.

I'm never too optimistic about finds given the time that has elapsed, the likelihood of anything being recorded, and even if it was recorded is playback still possible. However there were a number of episodes which were broadcast/repeated in Melbourne, Victoria on the ABC from the Troughton era and these could have been recorded from 1969 until 1973 according to broadwcast.org/

More possibilities than I thought! If any of these were recorded, it would be on reel to reel tape. Dr Who, Star Trek and Countdown had high priority for recording because the taper's son liked these programmes.

There is always the possibility that this guy could have transferred some now missing material to other formats. He will have been aware of what was missing and what wasn’t, particularly when certain programmes didn’t get repeats, so it’s not out of the question that there could be a bunch of VHS tapes or even USB sticks containing copies of now-destroyed reel to reel tapes.

Nice to have some possible potential for recoveries where, in reality, there was very little before.
