I've got the official VHS of that. It can't be that rare, just never released on DVD.

As I recall, 'The Woman in Black' had a UK video release, initially (only?) as a WHSmith exclusive. There was a US DVD release, though apparently the transfer wasn't great. Both releases are long OOP. It must be quite a sought-after item, as bootleg copies seem to be plentiful. I read that an official re-release is unlikely, owing to rights problems. I don't know if this is down to original author Susan Hill or the Nigel Kneale estate.

Just checked my tape. It's a Central Video release, exclusive to WH Smith. I guess the latter had a deal with Central granting them sole retail rights for a limited period, after which the title went on general release. I hope 'Woman in Black' is reissued at some point, legal wrangles permitting.

I just went to ebay UK to see if there were any Woman In Black DVDs, there were tons of bootlegged DVDs. There were also a few original ones too, but they are quite expensive. Hope this helps.
Lance.

weird, I saw this at the west end I think. Frightfully scary, I do hope its the same one. The TV film and stage play are both based on a novel by Susan Hill. She wrote another ghost story, 'The Mist in the Mirror'. I didn't think it lived up to 'The Woman in Black'. Not sure if it's been adapted for any other medium.

This thread keeps going, even though the originator has long gone without a thanks, response or sweet fanny adam.

This thread keeps going, even though the originator has long gone without a thanks, response or sweet fanny adam. Maybe he messed with the wrong ghost. Or maybe he figured someone would email him if they could help. Which suggests some misunderstanding of the whole forum concept.

My Christmas presents included a biography of Nigel Kneale, 'Into the Unknown'. According to the author, Central TV's rights to 'The Woman in Black' had strict conditions attached. To avoid 'competing' with the stage show, it could only be screened once [possibly twice] and the video could only be on sale for a short time. As the stage production is still going strong, the TV version may not resurface for some time. Bah humbug. I'm holding on to my WH Smith tape, that's for sure.
