I was wondering if the forum could be completely set to Member's only? Might stop some of the more zany postings of late. Of someone is posting things like these postings full of meaningless characters, they could be then removed?

I think it's fine the way it is. Admittedly, a handful of troublemakers come here occassionally, but why punish the genuine, innocent posters because of a few rotten apples? inetnum: 137.158.0.0 - 137.158.255.255 netname: UCTNET-B descr: University of Cape Town descr: Lovers' Walk descr: Lower Campus descr: Rondebosch descr: Cape Town descr: 7701 country: ZA org: ORG-ZZ213-AFRINIC admin-c: FG51-AFRINIC tech-c: FG51-AFRINIC status: ASSIGNED PI mnt-by: TF-137-158-MNT mnt-lower: TF-137-158-MNT source: AFRINIC # Filtered parent: 0.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255

I think it would be a bad idea to restrict things in this way. It might dissuade occasional viewers like me from posting. Worse still, someone with some vital information might not have the time or knowhow to register, and you might all lose their input.
Most importantly, it restricts human freedom.

I agree with the previous posters. There are many people who only come here to read/post quick messages, then leave. I know many people who don't like the hassle involved with having to register/login every time they may want to post messages. Some sites even require membership login just to READ the posts! Speaking personally, what first attracted me to this site/board was its lack of membership requirement, and thus it was unnecessary to have to keep logging in and out every time you wanted to post a single message. Apparently any board where anyone can post will attract the "comedy" elements, but personally, provided there isn't too much of it, it doesn't bother me THAT much. The Greek/Chinese/Whatever spammer is a different matter however......
Also, as I noted on another board/thread even with "members only" restrictions, there are still tossers who register as members, then post their rubbish logged in. When their membership account is removed, they simply register udner a different name................

the general forum will always allow guests to post new topics incase someone who has something stumbles in, most of the wallys hang out in the who section, hence the restrictions.

That said, it's not particularly nice to have someone using your name to ask (purposely) questions that have been asked (and answered) over and over again, and to provoke arguments for the hell of it.
