In my experience quite a number of technical people who worked in TV had no real interest in it but had got a job because a relative worked at a particular ITV company etc. So it's no surprise if some of them took no pride in their work. I bet that got worse as independent companies, often with poorly-paid staff, became more involved providing services from the 1980s onwards.
