I'm sure this has been discussed here but just a query. Been watching the 'Sounds of the Sixties' repeats on Yesterday in recent weeks and much of episode 2 comprises of what has remained of 2 editions of Top of the Pops from 12th and 19th August 1965. My thought has long been that all the clips are from the 19th August '65 edition due to the links that survive. Herman's Hermits comes from that edition according to TV pop diaries and Sonny and Cher and The Byrds seem to have links to clips from the previous week. Just wondered if the clips are a composite of two shows or they all come from the one show broadcast 19th August.

The links for the TOTP in question of course didn't feature in these repeats.

The Sonny & Cher and The Byrds were pre-taped, and may have been shown previously as well.

Thanks for the confirmation on that. It was The Shadows clip that I wondered about, being possibly a remnant from 12th August but I'd forgotten that a link to that also survives. A pity that The Shadows clip probably won't ever get shown in full on TV. I mean, why see them doing a vocal when you can watch them on 'Crackerjack' doing what they're most renowned for. It's still the first thing I would like to see on a new Totp2. I presume the 'Monster Music Mash' clip of 'Oh Well' will get shown rather than the Totp clip on the 'Fleetwood Mac at the BBC' special next week.

I'm curious, is the clip of 'Don't Make My Baby Blue' a, um, 'problematic' one...? I think I have only ever seen a brief snippet of this, which I think was on 'The Rock and Roll Years'. 'Sounds of the Sixties' was such a brilliant compilation series and introduced me to so many of those (now familiar) performances for the first time, as a 16-year-old, discovering and enjoying so much of this rich music and television heritage: I especially enjoyed the psych/prog editions, as these were genres I was getting right into back then. It's a shame, though, that the episodes weren't longer. So many clips they could have included, this Shadows one being one of them, showing their staying power throughout the decade and how they developed musically, rather than confining them to one episode. Also, I was always struck by those particular 1965 performances on 'Sounds of the Sixties' and their much sharper definition. Being familiar with b/w 'Doctor Who' and other old programmes taken from (what I now know are) telerecordings, I couldn't understand why these looked so different. Obviously now I presume these were from the original videotape. Is this edition the only one that survives on v/t?

The excerpt from the 1965 show is the only early VT we have of TOTP, and survives thanks to Bob Pratt.

The only appearance on TV of 'Don't Make My Baby Blue' remains the 25th anniversary edition of Top of the Pops from 25/12/88 as far as I'm aware. I still have it on vhs from that night. I guess the only thing with it is that whenever a chance to show The Shadows comes up you have the clip of 'FBI' on 'Crackerjack' that can be shown. Programme people presumably feel it's a more representative clip. As a TOTP clip it's priceless, the sound and the glossiness of the VT truly stunning. Lulu gets a special comp next week on BBC4 I notice. Anybody know if the 6/3/69 clip of 'Boom Bang a Bang' from her donated video of that edition will get shown?

Ah yes, sorry I thought it was 'The Rock and Roll Years' but I do think I remember that anniversary edition now. Would love to see this clip in full so yes, let's hope for a 'Shadows at the BBC' compilation - a hugely important and influential group which gets overlooked too often. I'll look out for that Lulu programme too. Thanks for the heads up!

Fabulous clip. Thanks. The VT sheen on those guitars! Yes definitely The Shads at the BBC please BBC4. Another thing about that edition; The album version of 'All I Really Want To Do' is played instead of the single version with some different vocals especially at the start. Is that why Mcguinn initially fluffs his mime and looks faintly puzzled for a moment. One of my favourite pop clips of all time.

Thank you for sharing this, Peter, and so good to finally see it. It's a great song and very underrated. Yes, the guitars look wonderful - my brother was a big fan of Burns guitars and they used these to play this song when we went to see them in 2005.
