Just seen the news they are putting all classic who on the iplayer along with some bonus features. I wonder if they will put the animations on there to watch....or any orphan episodes. Would be a great way to give people a taste of how animation has been used to restore the series and drum up excitement for future releases.
One thing I will say before I hear the optimists clapping, is this is not going to be a shadow release of loads of missing episodes. The BBC would never miss the opportunity to sell them all to us digitally before again in disk based format before bundling then into the collection. .If any missing episodes do turn up this way I will eat all 19 feet of my faux Tom Baker scarf

I'll be curious to see if they put the reconstructions of the Crusade and The Wheel In Space or the recreation of Mission To The Unknown on it.

I mean currently the only telesnap recons on (United States) britbox are for Wheel in Space and Web 3. The only animations are The Power of the Daleks and the two episodes of the invasion. Every other partially missing or completely missing story is just not there at all. The only way to get them is to buy them.

Anthony Coburn's son cancelled the BBC's license to show the episodes. You can see his tweet here, I warn you that he is not very kind.

I knew nothing about this......would this effect a future season one collection release?

I knew nothing about this......would this effect a future season one collection release? It's hard to believe that their previous licence to put the episodes on DVD didn't include future rights. Can you even "cancel" something like this? I can see not renewing it ... For what it's worth, all 4 episodes are still on Britbox in Canada.

I suspect the BBC lawyers will bury him in the centre of the earth.

I've tidied this thread up, including having to delete some fairly innocuous posts because they quoted less innocuous ones (apologies to the authors of those) - please avoid potentially libellous statements and personal insults.

No one would grant some sort of open ended licence or one that stretched into the very distant future. Unless they were naive, desperate for money (some actors sold their rights outright) or offered a huge sum. Was it Terry Wogan who joked about the BBC tie having small checks (cheques)? But joking aside, for the BBC it's about balancing likely demand for a product against the cost of producing it. This is why historically actors were paid for initial broadcast and a repeat rather than sell their rights outright. Do they want to pay £1,000 of licence fee money for initial broadcast plus a repeat or ten times the amount to buy the rights outright? This is why a lot of photographers and writers strongly object to their historic work being served up worldwide by the likes of Google and Facebook. They received a low fee for something to be published once in the UK only. Not forever worldwide. Creative people need to be paid for their work.

It will be interesting to see what the BBC lawyers or a High Court judge say about the antics of Coburn

It will be interesting to see what the BBC lawyers or a High Court judge say about the antics of Coburn Sad fact is all costs money. I can see them pursuing it for futrlure releases like if itl block a collection box set for example but even then itl depend on budget.i don't see them fighting it for iplayer. They could always go down the line of we won't pay to secure the rights but we'll make you take us to court to show we don't have the rights....but I honestly don't know the logistics of that or how or if that works. Sounds like an unfortunate mess.

Sounds like an unfortunate mess. Highly unlikely the BBC will take someone to court over this. Creative people are constantly portrayed as the enemy who are stopping things being shown or being on YouTube for nothing. The other side of the coin is that sometimes they don't get paid much. I think modern contracts have a clause saying something along the lines the person will enter into discussions about reuse in good faith and so on. But in the end the material belongs to the person who created it or their heirs.

I’ve seen bits and bobs regarding what could be called the “Coburn case”.
Unless there are legal issues is it possible for someone more knowledgeable to outline it?
Obviously Coburn wrote the first story but my understanding is that DW was created by Sidney Newman although Donald Wilson, et al contributed.
I think I’m probably looking for Richard Bignell…..
