Id bet it was the first 3 parts. By the early 1980s, it was very clear 10p4 was missing. Fandom started circulating multi generation copies of what existed. Even if one wanted to believe there was a 10p4, to get to a 4th or 5th generation copy would include a significant circulation. Also, if there was a 10p4, do you not think someone in dwm would have picked up on it at the time? Nothing here.. time to move on...

Ok thanks, George, so there definately was a 3 part TP VHS bootleg knocking about in the UK in the 80s? If so, this is likely what the guy had. But without contacting him, we can't prove he didn't see a 4 part version that might have eluded fandom at the time?
Had it been a 4 parter, word might not have reached the UK if the owner of the tape and the seller of it weren't aware of the missing ep? What if the ep 4 that mysteriously left the BBC post-Blue Peter did end up on a vhs copy somehow?

Yup, it was a n-th generation bootleg of parts 1-3. I still have my copy which I obtained circa 1987/88. Very snowy/muddy but (still) watchable. Got mine from a friend in the Toronto area.

Ok, thanks for the confirmation, Tom. I had half a mind to get onto the mail department of DWM, to contact the guy!

The DVD version also suffers from this snow effect, mainly in the exterior shots of south pole. Hoping this can be fixed for the season 4 Blu Ray.

Do not contact the DWM to get in contact with a random fan who shares memories of a missing episode. It is pointless. DWM will not disclose how to contact them as they are under GDPR and probably do not have contact details for those people are their submissions do not require contact details for the author.

I'd imagine the 5th gen vhs copy would look something similar, if not worse, than this. The footage shows second and third gen copies of Classic DW, but you get the idea. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLiN1riwmCM

Jason's a good mate of mine. I can assure you that he only had saw a bootleg VHS of eps 1-3 in Canada in 1989.

Richard

To be clear, I have no idea where the copy my friend sent to me came from. I didn’t ask and he didn’t offer. He was a college chum who ended up in the Toronto area and who shared an interest in all things Who.
Despite the terrible picture and sound, and the lack of episode 4, it was riveting to watch at the time. Strangely, the cover “art” to the case it came in is labeled 10P but shows Tom Baker’s face.

Compared to some of the bootlegs I had, these are excellent condition.
