Very interesting read. Clips of the smugglers is definitely unexpected, but this is cool stuff. Also the blurb at the end is very interesting, I didn't realize there was a UK version of fraggle rock or that it was missing episodes.

Very interesting read. Clips of the smugglers is definitely unexpected, but this is cool stuff. Unexpected in what way? I guess I thought that any colorized clips would be of a more popular or well known serial. I understood why they did smugglers after reading the article but it was not the story I thought they would do. Maybe I missed a rumor.

It seems a bit of a hubbub in a teacup as there have been other unofficial colourisations of '60s Who in recent years. Some of them done very well (even though personally I don't really like colourization). If it was officially sanctioned & a complete episode that would justify it as a Radio Times story much more. Ok I imagine that perhaps this Smugglers colourization may well be more "professional" in quality than most but as I say some previous colourised 60s Who clips seemed to be done very well.

I didn't realize there was a UK version of fraggle rock or that it was missing episodes. Neither did I when I took the trouble to import the whole series on DVD from the U.S. back in the early 2000’s only to wonder where on earth Fulton MacKay had gotten to! Afterwards I discovered that the bookend segments to each episode were specially filmed for certain territories which purchased/broadcast the show and that, at the time, the U.K. versions were largely missing from the archives. As the article briefly attests though efforts have been made to recover them in recent years and meeting with considerable success, fortunately.

It’s a bit of stretch at this point but possibly these efforts might tie in with the ‘Smugglers animation that was rumoured a few months back as part of the show’s 60th anniversary. Otherwise, as others have already remarked, colourising the remaining fragments of a story not exactly known for being a ‘fan favourite’ seems at bit pointless really. If the aforementioned rumour has any validity to it then possibly the augmented footage just might comprise part of the bonus material. You never know!

A story goes that many, but not all, of the missing Fraggle Rock UK episodes came from the archives of one of its showrunners. A certain Victor Pemberton, to be exact. Now if only he had the chance to do that with a certain Doctor Who serial he was involved in, hehe

It's still a large number though. I heard the pilot is missing, the only existing clip comes from the making of documentary where Jim Henson was showing the international versions which featured new live action settings. It was a comparison sequence for one scene, of which, if I remember rightly, three versions were shown. I can't remember the third, but I remember the British and German sequences were shown.

I know the American & French versions had different human characters.
