"For years, there have been whispers, and, against all odds… hope. Eventually, The Beatles showed up in a transfer that was clearly from the original videotape. Other short clips gradually surfaced… in surprisingly high quality. How?
As it so often turns out, the simplest explanation was the correct one: A lot of it was never lost in the first place.
That’s right: of the 85 “Shindig!” programs that were originally broadcast, 55 of the master quad videotapes still exist. A few (precious few) from the 2nd season are even in color!
And if that’s not enough for you, a few of the episodes also still have additional raw production recordings (“load reels”) in existence, featuring not only the entirety of some numbers that were edited for broadcast (or otherwise marred by credits in the final show), but also featuring rehearsals and alternate takes of some songs; all with the raw audio for each of those recordings, before the additional compression and audience “sweetening” (screaming girls) were applied!
Of course, for those programs that don’t still exist on tape, higher quality kinescopes are available. and with today’s technology, it’s refreshing to be able to say that there’s often no longer such a huge difference between a restored image, and the original videotape."

The biggest obstacles to material being released are presented by its not existing, or not being known to exist.With the Shindig upgrades, it's possible now to say to those who could exploit the material, "Look! It's on the shelf,there!". Surely that's a positive thing?

As long as the horder Reelin in the Years doesn't get involved we might have a chance - Would be great if they were shared like the Midnight Special company is currently doing - Uploading full shows in nice quality. |

The (alleged) owner of the master tapes sent me an extremely arrogant and rude email, DEMANDING that I name the person who told me about their existence... he then got even more irate when I told him that I was sworn to secrecy!  I'm with others here: I'd love to see an officially-released 'SHINDIG!' box-set, and failing that, see them uploaded to youtube in HD. But sadly, I can't see it happening anytime in the near future (at least we have our old multi-generation, time-coded VHS transfers, which is more than we have for many vintage shows!). As for who does or does not own the rights, that is for THEM to squabble over. As a FAN of both the show and much of the music featured on it, I just want to see the darn things, just like everyone else on here!  |
