Woody Herman and his orchestra plays the sounds of today Woody Herman, one of the few remaining giants of Big Band jazz, departs from his familiar sounds this year with a band built around the brilliant arrangements of Richard Evans, a young musician formerly involved in pop music.Woody and Richard have worked together on an entirely new concept in big band writing which points the way to a marriage of the worlds of pop and big band music.
Does the Forum think this marriage worked here? ...

Well I liked it William, thanks for sharing! What a great late-60s period piece. It's interesting to see how in the face of the unstoppable rise of pop music in the 1960s some band leaders fell by the wayside, whilst others updated their sound and continued to make some very worthwhile music, as in this programme, which I'm glad has been preserved on a domestic recording (although wouldn't it have looked fantastic on the original colour 2" tape!) I guess the interviews were edited out to make the 45 minute show fit on a reel of Sony CV2000 tape.
Incidentally, Woody Herman recorded a storming version of 'Hush' the Joe South/Deep Purple hit in this period. I haven't watched this complete show yet, so maybe they'll play it!

Thanks Steve and you are welcome ! I'm glad you liked it. I agree, thank goodness some band leaders updated their sound and that this show has been preserved. It would also have looked better in the original 2" colour tape. I've not watched it all yet either hopefully it includes HUSH. P.S. On an unrelated note have you seen the Tom Robinson interview in the Nexus?
