The 'glitch' is actually tape damage. When I got my VHS of it when I worked in VT at Television Centre, it wasn't damaged. I gave that VHS to Chris at Kaleidoscope a couple of years ago.

Yes, physical damage, I don't know how it happened. Yes, I wish I had saved more stuff too, of other things, but you had to be careful!

That's nonsense... ...there's no denying it was better than the cheap amateurish pilot. Well of course it is. The same as what you say is your opinion. Isn't that the point of a discussion forum? Matters of taste are subjective. I prefer the more intelligent writing on series 1, you prefer Ben Elton's knob gags. Ah, so it WAS just an opinion then. There's no "just" about it. Of course reaction to comedy is subjective. Why shouldn't it be? I don't really understand what you're getting at. Are you saying my opinion is less valid than yours? If so - why?

I'm quite fond of the first series - it's sumptuously made and has a real unpredictability about it, before the set gags, catchphrases and exaggerated metaphors set in. Exactly my point.

There's no "just" about it. Of course reaction to comedy is subjective. Why shouldn't it be? I don't really understand what you're getting at. Are you saying my opinion is less valid than yours? If so - why? Second time you're putting words in my mouth. But if you must know, YES, what I wrote IS superior for the simple reason that I'm considering what the writers/creators said about it (u-turning on the concept and characters), facts about the production (studio close-ups vs. on-location long shots), and also what others think (generally people are reminded more of series II when they see the pilot). Even an opinion has to make some sense. You say it's all just an opinion now; and indeed, if you prefer the results of the filmed episodes, then it makes perfect sense for you to dislike the pilot, then like series 1, and then dislike 2-4 again. For all I know it's partly a visual preference for you; after all, (as said before,) the script was re-used for S1E2. More filmic-realistic look, yeah, I can see why that would make a difference.
But you didn't say that, you started off by writing how vastly inferior the pilot was compared to series 1. And that was the thing that made me go "well, I don't know, I'm not so sure about that". Let me try to explain it to you this way. I dislike the entire 4th series, because it was too repetitive and predictable, with its lengthy comparisons and each week's "Darling" joke. And a few other reasons. But to others "Goes forth" is their absolute favourite which they can't stop quoting (and which they somehow think is meaningful food for thought when it comes to the Great War). So if the unaired pilot had resembled "General hospital" for some reason, then I would be forced to accept that it foreshadowed future ideas and success, whether it was my cup of tea or not. I hope it's now adequately been explained so that we can all move on.

It's OK, a very feelgood documentary/retrospective. A bit zoomed-in perhaps - not every sentence is a revelation. (But then, does it have to be?)
