To think they have been doing this for over twelve months.

Glad it's being carried out but I hope we get to learn what's recovered afterwards and also have a chance to see the material. Personally i'm crossing my fingers for some Rediffusion material and early Public Eye turning up!

This initative looks very promising indeed. I keep hoping for more material to resourface from Rediffusion, ABC. It would be nice to have some more Avengers episodes recovered. I look forward to seeing the results.
Lance.

That sounds exciting, Mr Henderson. The more good old Associated Rediffusion programmes recovered the better, and I am certain that goes for all the enthusiasts on this web site.
Yours,

It's a good database but there seem to be a few errors. For instance, the Not Only... But Also list claims that a 16mm print of the final episode of Series 3 exists while the Steptoe and Son doesn't mention My Old Man's A Tory.

But that Steptoe episode only exists as a camera copy of a 188 line CV2000 tape. If someone had a proper film recording of the episode, they'd want to get that as it would be much better quality.

I have Rediffusion programmes which are thought lost. Can you get in touch with the Lost Archive people then, Andy? I'm sure a lot a lot of people here will thank you for returning stuff we'd all like to see again!

I'm sure a lot a lot of people here will thank you for returning stuff we'd all like to see again! The BFI were (a few years ago) given a list of films for possible use in Missing Believed Wiped. Some of these were, but others weren't. I took that as a sign that some of the material wasn't wanted. A little later, one of the other ITV companies made a plea for lost material, I could have helped but was warned away by a third party with an implication that the film might be retained and I would only receive a VHS copy. A lot of the interest in lost films ebbs and flows depending on need. At the moment there is a drive, but I am skeptical about getting involved in something like this.

What is the nature of the missing stuff, Andy? Is it Rediffusion drama, comedy or other? I tend to agree that the BFI have their own agenda as to what is worth retrieving and what isn't (although they probably would not admit this publicly) and has probably stopped material being recovered in the past that is out there. As far as keeping your own film copies is concerned, maybe by going through respected bodies like Kaleidoscope (who would honour your copy being returned, i'm sure) is the way to do it; if this "Lost Archive" project is a big push then it's probably in the organisers' interest to return people's originals (as with past efforts like Treasure Hunt) and not generate bad PR for themselves. I share your skepticism about these initiatives but it's still a pity if missing stuff can't be returned...

I share your skepticism about these initiatives but it's still a pity if missing stuff can't be returned... The relationship betwen film collectors and archives has always been a problem. In the 1950s the then curators in the BFI turned away prints they could have had, which are now lost for good. I don't think there is an agenda today, just common sense that they can't keep everything. The BFI have done an incredible amount of good on very limited resources. For example, these Missing Believed Wiped events take place at the weekends when many of the staff present should have the day off. Plus in recent years there has been a wealth of finds. Every collector thinks he or she has an important treasure, but it may not be. What sort of things? Yes, drama and comedy. Things like this: Remember though, even if material is returned, much of it never sees the light of day, just like the material already there!

That's very interesting Andy. I presume this is from Seven Deadly Sins. Complete copies are missing I believe from - File on Harry Jordan A Cold Heart A Temporary Typist In the Night A Lion in his Way
I believe that 5 are missing from Seven Deadly Virtues.
From Redifussion I would most like to see the missing episodes of Orlando and Badger's Bend.
