I read on YouTube that the video for the song 10538 Overture by ELO was used later in the TOTP program. Does anyone know anything more about it? Was it really the video that was used in TOTP? I read elsewhere that on 27-02-1972 ELO had a studio performance, then on 03-08-1972 there was repeat performance, and a third performance was on 17-08-1972. So what is the truth?

There wasn't a TOTP episode on 27-02-72, and in any case "10538 Overture" wasn't released until 23-06-72.

Yes, I think about this video. It was used for TOTP?

People, wake up ... Isn't there any ELO expert here? There will be someone who knows the (true) answer to my question that I asked in this post

Morning Jan,
It was extremely rare to have the same song two weeks running on TOTP, however this song is rare in that it jumped from 45 to 20 in a week.
There were already 3 videos on that edition, 1 made by Caravel, the other 2 I believe were homemade by the band themselves. I can not really see there being 4 videos. Is there a reason you think this particular video was shown?
My guess would be that ELO either did two takes on the 27-07 show, or returned for the 03-08 one, for a second performance. It was an almost guaranteed impossibility that the same performance got shown twice in a row, no matter how high it had jumped. They always left two week gaps.

People, wake up ... Isn't there any ELO expert here? There will be someone who knows the (true) answer to my question that I asked in this post Hi Jan. My gut feeling here is that the video you referenced here was not shown on TOTP. Admittedly, that is a guess, but let me explain my thinking.... The video does employ some of the effects supplied used by Tele-fex (who supplied effects to TOTP amongst others). This does not mean it was a film shown on TOTP. It's very much in the same style as a number of pop videos shot in a similar way during the period 1972-1975 where the band or singer in question is trying to get around the miming ban by looking like they're performing live. It's not a TOTP studio performance; the lack of audience, background art pieces and BBC moniker on any of the cameras in shot support my theory on that. Most of the promo films made in this style were not shown on TOTP; I can only think of one that was - which was by the band the Arrows - and the fact they weren't British MU members makes me think that this was why it was shown. (Oddly, of course, in 1975, Jet Records utilized a TOTP performance by Roy Wood as a promotional film - which also had occurred with David Cassidy in 1973!) I think the upload comes from VH1, via it's acquisition from likely Avro; as the graphics at the beginning are very similar to those used for some films shown on Top Pop in the early and mid-70s. So my thought is, the film was not the one shown on TOTP. Sorry for my late reply and also sorry for being convinced it's not from TOTP!

Hi Ray, Thanks a lot for these thoughts. I myself was surprised if this promo video was shown on TOTP, because on the website dedicated to TOTP I found information that ELO had 2 studio performances and 1 repeat performance of this song. When I read on YT that this promo video was later used in the TOTP program, I started to wonder who was right, hence my question on this forum, especially to ELO fans So thank you to everyone who tried to satisfy my curiosity.

TOTP2 have on many occasions used film that wasn't shown on TOTP. A very good example was Je T'Aime which not only was not shown in it's vocal duet version on the show, but the TOTP2 film was in colour....

The 10538 Overture 'promo' was made by Video Supplements & Crown International. It was first shown in the UK on the OGWT on 16-05-72.

Paul, I am sure now the person from YT confused OGWT with TOTP and provided wrong information. All is clear for me now.

Morning Jan, It was extremely rare to have the same song two weeks running on TOTP, however this song is rare in that it jumped from 45 to 20 in a week. I can distinctly remember Caroline by Status Quo appearing several weeks in succession on TOTP, without moving much in the charts, maybe peaking at 4. Me and my school friends used to moan about it on the Friday mornings afterwards!
