Hello, another post kind of related to the centenary of the BBC. I was watching some Top of the Pops 2s that I recorded and saw the colour VT clip of 'Come and Get It' by Badfinger. I've known for some time that this comes from the New Year's Day 1970 edition of Top of the Pops, repeated on the saved 29th January '70 edition. It got me thinking, what else from BBC 1 and 2 or ITV survives from the first day of the 1970s, excluding movies and cartoons? Initiating further scratches of the head does anything exist from New Year's Day 1960 and (highly unlikely) from day 1 of 1950?

There's a broadcast from Hogmanay 1960 of Andy Stewart (and the White Heather Club). It can be seen on Youtube.

Softly Softly - Task Force: Any Other Night.
There must also be a fairly good chance that Blue Peter and Play School exist.

I was under the impression that the 29/01/1970 tx existing Badfinger was actually different from the wiped 01/01/1970 tx one?

An ITV review show of the highlights of 1959 (which was presumably for the New Year week of 1960) apparently survives on 405 line VT. But don't know where you would find it now..
I thought a complete session with Badfinger had been shot and separate songs been used for TOTPs etc.

There's no audience and its got a different stage set to anything else on the 29th Jan edition. Because it was made during Christmastime, it's possible there wasn't an audience on the new years day edition. So, I deduce that the Badfinger performance is from TOTP 1st Jan 1970 ♥

So the session (without the audience) may? have been recorded by the BBC during that period as a sort of showcase for the band with clips to be used as the band gained popularity. If the 1/1/70 show version had the audience then that was probably part of a normal TOTPs' Wednesday recording to be shown on a Thursday 1/1/70.

I thought Rare Bird's 29/01/1970 is on the same set?
I'll see if anyone has the PasB for this edition.
It's all very intriguing and I thank you all for your your input here.
If it was 01/01/1970.... than that's obviously a clip we didn't know about from that edition.
I'll do some checks.

Badfinger taped it the previous day. Solved.

Thank you all for those replies. Very interesting. Thank you for clearing up the Badfinger recording. I'd got it from one Totp related site that it was from 1/1/70 but I had wondered as it's the space capsule set design that you see for Edison Lighthouse and Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. I had a look at some of the 'Softly Softly Taskforce' episode and it's a classic piece of new year TV. Another thing of course survives from 1/1/70 ; Ep 1 of 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII; Catherine of Aragon'. Would be fascinating to watch the year end programme from 1959 if it ever surfaced. Once again it should be a great year for archive TV on the BBC.
Ps, should be a 'Totp' page question but Ray is there any chance that The Turtles 27/07/67 appearance will ever appear on BBC4? Most of it is good quality VT from what I've seen. Michael

It ain't rare for me to get it all wrong ♥ I've always felt the cultural damage caused by the Mass-Wiping is a tragedy of the highest magnitude...
