Hello, happy new year to you all. 2022 is of course the centenary year of the BBC and it looks like a real feast of tv treasures will be shown from the information on the BBC website. This leads one to think about what music clips may get shown from their awe inspiring archive. I'd love to know what other bloggers would love to see over this year. With a little help from the 'TV Pop Diaries' website, here's a little wishlist of music clips and shows.
No it isn't terribly comprehensive (I mean where do you start?) but most of these things I have never seen on the box in the corner before and the ones I have, not since the time of original transmission. If any one of these things get shown in 2022 I will be thrilled.
I still maintain that a YouTube clip is not a match for a TV broadcast.
Adelaide Hall (1947); The earliest known BBC telerecording.
Big Bill Broonzy, 'Low Light and Blue Smoke' (1956) Not a BBC production but it is just under 17 minutes of pure magic and on its first (and only?) showing it changed many musicians lives.
The Shadows, 'Don't Make My Baby Blue', 'Top of the Pops' (BBC1, 19th August 1965) Surely the coolest surviving Totp clip to not be repeated in full.
'A Whole Scene Going' (BBC2, 8th June 1966) Full episode.
'Omnibus: Jacqueline' (BBC1,8th December 1967)
'Top of the Pops' recovered clips from Jul '67 and Nov '69 editions
The Pentangle, 'Songs From a Country Church' (BBC2, 26th December 1970)
'In Concert'; Compilation Show (BBC2, c1973). For the brief clip of Laura Nyro.
'Nationwide' (BBC1, 28th November 1976), Full show. I would love to know what items The Sex Pistols crashed through the middle of.
'Top of the Pops' (BBC1, 12th July 1979). Missed most of the Summer '79 editions when repeated when it was so hard to keep track of when it was in the schedules and this edition is a classic.
'Rock Goes To College'; Joe Jackson (BBC2, 14th January 1980)
'The Multi Coloured Music Show' (BBC1, 5th May 1980) No idea if this has survived but its a great line up and I have the vaguest memory of The Pretenders doing 'Brass In Pocket' on 'Swap Shop'.
Aztec Camera, 'Working In a Goldmine'; 'Garden Party' (BBC1, 18th July 1988)
'Paramount City' (BBC1) Anything from this show but especially Soul II Soul (12th May 1990) and B52s (26th May 1990)
'The Brit Awards' (BBC1, 12th February 1992)
'Later With Jools Holland'; Radiohead Special (BBC2, 28th January 2008)
Please correct me if any of these programmes / clips no longer exist.
