I think my video player will probably chew tapes rather than play them.
Can you buy a new one now, like those ones you've just mentioned?

You may be able to find NEW OLD STOCK VCRs, (N.O.S. for short) for sale online. VHS machines have not been manufactured in quite awhile.
The last multi standard VHS I bought (PAL/NTSC) came from Brazil, with Portuguese menus. Circa 2014.
The bad thing about NOS, is over time the white lithium grease on the carriage rollers, motor gears and mechanisms can dry out over time. So the machine may need servicing even if it is NOS.
I used to service VCRs, so not a big deal for me, but you do need to know what and what not to do etc...

I made the mistake of leaving my VCR plugged in even when not using it. Over the years some capacitors in the power supply wore out, but it was only after a power cut they stopped the VCR from working.
I was lucky to find the same model of VCR with a working power supply (but in worse condition) to transplant in, thinks to finding the service manual online. I kept the old power supply hoping to replace the capacitors, but the shielding looks very hard to remove to get to the board inside.
Since this I've always turned the VCR off at the wall if I'm not using it.

Does anyone service VCRs now?
Also, once you got the thing running, how difficult is it to turn what comes out of the SCART socket into something that can be ingested by a PC?

I've seen capacitors fail in the way you describe. Fluorescent Light tubes as well. Lack of use can kill capacitors as well. NOS electronics 20 plus years old, plug it in the first time and you can hear the capacitors pop like corn. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. As for rare material, I wouldn't risk something on a untrusted machine.

Richard That's a good question. The VCR's that were made last decade were throw away machines. Clean and grease them is about all you could do. Companies used to make parts for the older machines. I did a search for new VCRs and got a few hits. So there is a few floating around. JVC and Panasonic were good brands. Few of them came in for repairs etc. As for the SCART socket, there are adapters, and video cards available. I'd do a search for what you need.

The only thing I have somewhere on a VHS tape (at least, I hope I haven't lost it) which seems impossible to find elsewhere is a copy of this: www.christophermiles.info/Films/Six_Sided_Triangle/index.html- which I really enjoyed. I suppose I might have some other off-air rarities like adverts and continuity announcements from the past. I've been thinking for ages that I must somehow or another get something set up and start playing my collection through. I just never seem to get round to it :-| Richard

I’ve just been sorting through some VHS tapes before they go on eBay. One has a BBC1 slide advertising an episode of Delta and the Bannerman, would this be of interest to you? Also, it’s just reminded me that I think I’ve seen some Dr Who on some Betamax tapes I had out recently. So there may be some trailer/idents on there from around 1983/1984. I'd definitely be very interested in digitising the Bannermen slide and anything else you might have.
Would it be OK to send you a private message?

Anyone in the USA interested in off air recordings of Dr Who from about 1983-1989? WTTW Chicago, 90min format. Shipping from here to UK is a small fortune.

I've mainly avoided jumping into the sea of US off-air Doctor Who as I don't think I have enough understanding of the TV landscape over there to do a decent job.
And as you say, the shipping can hurt.

I've been very lucky with JVC VHS machines over the past few years. I can recommend any of the following models:
HR-S7955 HR-S8600 (don't bother with the 9500 or 9600, they develop reel braking faults) HM-HDS1
Which are TBC models. The best non-TBC JVC model I've come across is
HR-DD949
You'll get great results from any of those.

I just wanted to quickly post some public thanks to the people who have taken the trouble to contact me and offer their footage. I've been sent some great stuff by some really lovely people. Thank you, thank you.
