Sounds like a job for “The Indiana Jones of Missing Television”. 😉 The invisible man imho 👍

Unless someone can conjure up a nice convenient blue police box without a randomiser I’m not sure that Iran is gonna be checked any time soon. Considering the punishments handed out for seemingly irrelevant and trivial things I’m not sure I’d like to try and explain that I was looking for 16mm b&w prints of an almost 60 year old British TV programme - it could result in 60 lashes and 60 years! I see Iran as extremely unlikely but needs checking if possible. The prints didn’t go back to New Zealand, as Harriett Street records show that they held 3-7 but not 1-2. The prints were probably returned to the BBC, as it is known that the other Iranian prints were returned. I have always considered the idea that at least Marco Polo 7 is held in a mislabelled film can, as the film can for Marco Polo 7 was found in the 90s but turned out to have something else inside, it’s probably just wishful thinking on my part though. Best place to look for Marco Polo would be Ethiopia, it hasn’t been thoroughly checked and wasn’t able to be returned. I think Nigeria is a possibility, the episodes that may have been destroyed in 1997 were from an unknown African country despite being widely rumoured to be Nigeria, they could have been Arabic prints in Northern Africa or Ethiopia. Even though the BBC said that they could be destroyed, that doesn’t necessarily mean they were.

It ended in 1991 and I doubt rebels would target Doctor Who film prints. If they did, they are human scum! Also, there is Thailand but Thailand’s prints were probably junked, but may be doing the rounds with private collectors. The Thai copy of Reign of Terror 1 was sold on eBay in 2012.

There’s a civil war in Ethiopia NOW! I was due to go on a tour in 2020 but Covid ****ed that up! It was rescheduled but the dangerous situation resulted in cancellation. However, I do believe that it’s the sort of place where there could be another Jos - but we don’t know if PM has been. The one lesson that I hope has been learnt is that boots on the ground are vital. There are, of course, stories about the Ark of Covenant being in Ethiopia - perhaps it’s got prints of Marco Polo in it 👍

Doing some research, it seems that PM went there circa ten years ago according to his Twitter. Don’t know what in particular he checked though

Did he just check modern premises?

Meanwhile in the same tweet he also claimed that every broadcaster who aired Missing Who had been checked, and even if he has been there, how thoroughly did he check it? Did he just check modern premises? Although I’ve never met him he seems a pretty good type. Anyone who’s been through an office move knows that it’s inevitably accompanied by a clearout. Old cans of 16mm b&w film don’t move to new offices, they’re binned, sent to an archive or, if there’s local demand, they might end up with a collector.
