It is known that Germany recieved audition prints of the Ice Warriors in 1968, and rejected them in favour of 'Star Trek'. But in 1965, they were offered three Hartnell stories; Marco Polo, The Aztecs and The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Could audition prints of these prints have been sent in 1965?
Is it known of the fate of the Ice Warriors prints, and if prints of the three Hartnells were sent in 1965?

While you should never assume everything, in this case you can safely assume that people already asked them if they had any.
Also, what channel was the offer made to in 1965? It was West-Germany, presumably, but even then there are several.

If a TV station doesn't keep the foreign programmes they *did* purchase and broadcast, they are hardly going to keep the ones they *didn't*.

While I don't know of any examples, I could imagine audition prints staying in limbo for a bit. Wait, I sort of know an example, come to think of it. The Dutch kept two episodes of a quiz show, Pit your wits. It was not shown. A remake pilot was made. The two examples were for some reason not returned or discarded.

No, except in the case I just mentioned. If two episodes of Marco Polo ever return from Iran, I'll be among the first to dance with joy, but until that time, I'm not assuming anything.

Also Italy was offered Marco Polo in 1965 as well, but like Germany, the station is unknown.

Fair enough, it’s academic anyway as we’ve said often enough the logistics aren’t promising to put it mildly, regardless.

And when I say pretty much, I mean, the RAI had two channels, and there were no other TV stations in Italy.

Ah thanks for clarifying, I’m not too familiar with Italian stations

This site says NO to Iran and doesn't mention the German 1965 story: missingepisodes.blogspot.com/p/howmanyprints.htmlOf course, it depends who compiled this list. But is there actually a reliable source for this idea about 1965 offers to Germany?

But is there actually a reliable source for this idea about 1965 offers to Germany? BBC memos survive which mention it alongside other offers to other European countries. The blogspot is only an interpretation, and while I do think it has some good, interesting information on 60s Who related stuff, it’s How Many Prints section isn’t necessarily the most accurate. Iran hasn’t been checked and it’s statement that they don’t have BBC film comes from Ian Levine's calls to TV stations, which are not conclusive evidence that they don’t have anything. They could have moved buildings since the 1960s.

Unless someone can conjure up a nice convenient blue police box without a randomiser I’m not sure that Iran is gonna be checked any time soon. Considering the punishments handed out for seemingly irrelevant and trivial things I’m not sure I’d like to try and explain that I was looking for 16mm b&w prints of an almost 60 year old British TV programme - it could result in 60 lashes and 60 years!
I see Iran as extremely unlikely but needs checking if possible.

Sounds like a job for “The Indiana Jones of Missing Television”. 😉
