Some fans have assumed the butcher photo shoot was a statement about Capitol butchering their albums. Probably the most butchered of all was the US version of 'Revolver'. As 'I’m Only Sleeping' 'Dr. Robert' and 'And Your Bird Can Sing' had already been released on 'Yesterday and Today', their 11 song version had just 2 songs with John Lennon lead vocals while George Harrison had 3! It was a similar situation with The Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, The Searchers, The Animals and just about any other act who had moderate US success in the mid '60s (I spent the best part of a year researching these UK/US variations for my last book 'Having A Rave Up! and was shocked at just how different some of the albums were). US record companies wanted the hit singles included on the albums and didn't want LPs to have fourteen tracks ... The Kinks were perhaps the first major UK group of the period to have their LPs released in the US with the same track listing? (starting from their third album The Kink Kontroversy which had the same 12 tracks in both countries)

Without checking, I think the earliest example in my book was Cliff Richard's 1964 'Wonderful Life' soundtrack album, retitled 'Seaside Swingers' in the USA but otherwise the same. Of course, the USA also had some nice exclusives such as Gerry and The Pacemakers' 1965 'I'll Be There' album, and things like The Rolling Stones' 1967 'Flowers' works well as an album in its own right.

I've often noticed that American albums are shorter, even in the CD area.

Thanks Peter Check for the info on the Eleanor Rigby TOTP promo, it's pretty much what I remember when seeing it and what I saw was on YouTube channel in the past 2 years, but now entirely absent from YT. Your book sounds like an interesting addition and worth getting.

Looks like the fun police killed the dailymotion link.

can anybody clear up the info of the Dailymotion link to the TOTP episode please. was it a genuine film episode or was it simply a fan re-creation of the missing episode with only audio it doesn't help that the episode was apparently found or uploaded on Dailymotion less than a month ago (in this thread on page 1) only to be left with a useless dead link.

Thanks, it was quite common to do this until at least the early 1970s & not confined to the USA. Prince's 1999 was cut down to a single disc on it's original UK release a good decade after this stopped being a common thing.

It wasn't this video you saw was it? Wow! Thanks Paul Watkins, think this could be it, where is it from? This is the one I remember seeing a few years back on the Internet and presumed it was the one I remember from TOTP 1966, is there any way of finding out if this actually was the little film that was on the 1966 TOTP edition?

TOTP was in black and white until late 1969, so it is highly doubtful that a film specially made for the show in 1966 would've been in colour.

Many of the promos shown on TOTP in the 60's were made in colour. Not all directors were using B&W film.

Many of the promos shown on TOTP in the 60's were made in colour. Not all directors were using B&W film. Paul, that is certainly the case for promos directed by people like Peter Whitehead and sent out to a variety of different world-wide shows, but I can't recall any that were made specifically for TOTP being in colour before November 1969. Looking at the list on your own (excellent) site, most of the TOTP videos I've seen from the 1964-1968 era have been in black & white: nostalgicmusictv.x10host.com/totppromos.htmThe one exception is The Move's 'Flowers In The Rain' which I didn't think was made solely for TOTP, though I'm happy to be proven wrong (maybe Thomas Walsh knows for sure?).

The Move like many others artists filmed these for inclusion on many of the TV shows of the time.

The video i posted above for Eleanor Rigby wasn't made especially for TOTP. So is it definitely the same one shown on TOTP? ..... Actually, I just referred to my own book on The Beatles ('The Beatles: Tell Me What You See'), and this is what I wrote: 08-09-66 – ‘Top Of The Pops’ Video (UK)Eleanor Rigby Again made for ‘Top Of The Pops’, and broadcast just the once on 08-09-66, this features a montage of still images of an actor dressed as a priest while in a Manchester churchyard. Even at the time, viewers must’ve found this underwhelming, despite the undoubted high quality of the accompanying soundtrack. So it seems this is NOT the TOTP video.
