Worth quoting, I think, on the Magpie appearance:
Suggs goes AWOL (a Chelsea away day?) so the band go live and instrumental! A trusted and erudite member of Madness insists that this was the band’s debut television appearance however ITV were on strike from the 6th August until 24th October so ‘Magpie’ was not broadcast during that period at least. Some extra information has surfaced thanks to some of you out there looking in; it seems Mick Robertson questioned Chas about violence on the 2 Tone Tour and there was some input too from the audience before “Swan Lake” was performed as the credits rolled. We can only hope that this particular episode of ITV’s groovier answer to BBC’s Blue Peter escaped the wrath of the archive wiping police and that it still exists somewhere out there. Apologies for the poor quality and short length of the clip I have posted but it’s the only one I’ve ever been able to track down.

Solved.
16th November 1979.
Only 5 Magpie episodes were broadcast during November 1979. Prior to this ITV were on strike, so there were none in October. October and November were the months when they were plugging OSB and the 2-Tone tour.
Where were Madness?
13.11.1979 in Scotland 16.11.1979 LONDON. They returned having had a gig cancelled the night before in Carlisle. This my explain Suggs' absence. 20.11.1979 in the USA 23.11.1979 DITTO 27.11.1979 DITTO

It's interesting that only Chris Foreman can remember doing Magpie. I imagine having a gig cancelled the night before, there may have been a few beers involved!
