Look around a bit before asking questions you could find an answer to by yourself. There is an American dvd set and an identical Chinese set as well. The European set is said to be still underway - it just takes a lot of time.

Hi,
Following comments made on an earlier thread, I e-mailed Columbia Tristar and asked if/when the full series of Python will be released.
Got a reply today in which they state that the Monty Python Personal Bests DVD Collection is scheduled for release in October. Was naively hoping they'd confirm an extras-laden, restored release of the show. Hmm. I suppose the series set might follow later... hopefully it'll be worth the wait!
Anyone on the board seen this Personal Best compilation? I gather it's available on R1 DVD...
Regards,
David

Well, I bought pretty much every python-related dvd except for those.
As far as I can tell it's another cheap compilation. Very little new material. Why didn't they just name it "The hastily cobbled together for a quick buck dvd"?
So far, I still haven't seen a single monty python dvd that did not forget to include something. The latest addition, yellowbeard, is no exception: no trailer, not even a proper menu, not the "Group Madness - making of Yellowbeard".
What I also never heard anyone about was the Hollywood Bowl. The recording of the show went to film and the film got transferred to dvd (again without the trailer). Anyone ever heard what happend to the recordings?

When did 'Hollywood Bowl' come out on DVD?. Is it a U.S. release?.

In regards to the Hollywood Bowl recordings, I believe it was recorded to VT, transferred to film, and the original VT has been junked There was a DVD in Australia of the entire Hollywood Bowl film, although I'm not sure if it is still available.

Yes, there is an Australian DVD by rainbow entertainment; and it's part of the US "monty python live" box.
Neither of those includes any extras for the Bowl. But the theatrical trailer sometimes turns op on 35mm film (I have a copy).
May I asked what your sources are for the VT being junked? Sounds damn stupid to me!

So then the complete set (UK version) doesn't look likely to ever emerge? The upcoming release is another compilation?

Please, not another compilation! But columbia has so far released quite acceptable python dvds, so IF they proceed, they will probably do a good job.

Didn't that other chap say it was just the US "Personal Best" in a R2 release? I remember someone on another thread going on about how we were finally going to get the Python box set, and it apperas that it is just this!! It will probably overlap heavily with the 3-dvd "best of" set that's all that's currently available!

Well, I contacted Roger Saunders over some small matter and apparently columbia is still working on it - so the project has not been abandoned. That is all I know but at least it's from a reliable source.
I am repeating myself a lot here but "Personal best" sounds like "hastily cobbled together for a quick buck (or quid)" to me.

Hi,
"Well, I contacted Roger Saunders over some small matter and apparently columbia is still working on it - so the project has not been abandoned"
Thanks for the update on this!
Does anyone know the status of the original 2-inch videotapes of Monty Python? I’m wondering if they fell within the remit of the BBC’s Quad to D3 archiving project, having read elsewhere that the Pythons actually own the recordings following a court ruling in the US (?) Did Python Pictures/‘Monty Python Limited’ actually take physical possession of the tapes following that case?
If the BBC have D3 copies of the 2-inch tapes then perhaps it’s more likely that any forthcoming release could benefit from their expertise in dealing with archive video. One specific example would be the use of the BBC’s Transform PAL decoder and the kind of cleanup detailed on the Doctor Who Restoration Team website. Python would surely benefit from the kind of work currently undertaken on Doctor Who and it’d be disappointing if the technical side of the release were not the best possible considering the long wait for a complete series release!
Still it’ll be nice to see it at all even if the release isn't loaded with extras and meticulously restored. In either case hopefully the show will be mastered from the best source and perhaps cautiously noise-reduced (unlike the smeary, over-processed ‘Best Of Series 1’!)
Regards,
David

I'd love Python to get a proper R2 release! Come on 2|entertain, you know it makes sense! That said, there was a release in Spain - but I think those DVDs are already out-of-print. And I suspect they had forced subtitles in Spanish and Catalan.

Actually, the current US release (and the identical Chinese bootleg) are region 0 = all regions. A Spanish release? Never knew that. Are you sure it wasn't a bootleg?

Actually, the current US release (and the identical Chinese bootleg) are region 0 = all regions. A Spanish release? Never knew that. Are you sure it wasn't a bootleg? Up to the moment I have toyed from time to time with the idea of buying the US release. (Who knows, I probably *might*. ) Yes, there was a Spanish release. They released all the series, and it wasn't a bootleg - it was released by a DVD company known as Manga Films, which specialises in Manga and Cult / Offbeat film titles. They also released all Python movies bar The Meaning of Life. Plus some of the later 80s solo films by some of the Pythons (Erik the Viking springs to mind). However, I strongly suspect they had unremovable subtitles in Spanish and Catalan (i.e. you could choose subs in one language or the other, but you couldn't choose to switch either subs off. ), but with audio in its original English. (Subtitles must have been based on the Spanish Paramount Comedy Channel's run of Python c2000, and Catalan regional televison also run it around 2002ish. Plus Manga Films is a DVD company based in Barcelona, in Catalonia ). I suspect they had forced subs because I have seen some DVDs from Manga and they have forced subtitles in the original language ( V.O.S. - versión original subtitulada - O.V.S. - original version subtitled). I read on the Mausoleum Club that some of Manga's early Hammer releases had a possibility of removing subtitles (which might have been due to a technical mishap), but they seem to have corrected that error, alas.
