Hello all.....
I’ve been meaning to post about this for a while, but I lost my login details and had to re-register for the forum. So I guess I now look like a total newcomer, instead of someone who has been reading the forum pretty much since it started, and very probably that won’t help my cause, but anyway….
Please forgive the lengthy post. I’ve tried to keep it brief, but my Asperger’s likes to be over-long and verbose....
It boils down to two main points:
Firstly, Like all of us, I’m trying to make some use of this interminable extra time at home, and I am continuing the digitising and labelling of my VHS Doctor Who clips and continuities collection and tidying all the digital stuff too.
To help me with identifying my trailers and continuity and filing them correctly by date, I decided it would be helpful to compile a list of every known BBC TX of a Doctor Who trail or promo.
I started work on this project with a friend. He worked for the BBC so had access to BBC Redux, which would’ve helped with the post-2009 list.
Unfortunately, we hadn’t really started before my friend stopped working for the Beeb.
I continued to work on getting accurate TX dates and times for the stuff in my collection.
Before I carry on with the mammoth wider task of attempting to list every BBC trail TX though, I thought it would be wise to check that the work hadn’t already been done, maybe by the esteemed Mr Pixley or someone else with better access to info than I have?
I’ve had a search around and I can’t find any website or publication that has such a list.
I guess it would be a pretty long list!
Anyway, I thought I’d ask here before replicating someone else’s research.
There is the Millennium Effect website which I notice is back with a facelift, but it still has the same old errors that need correcting and it doesn’t nail trailers down to specific TX times.
I have tried to get in touch to help correct the errors, but as far as I can see, the only way to contact them is via Twitter, which I tried, but seldom use and I probably got all wrong.
I have copies of most trailers etc from ‘86 onwards recorded off-air and I’ve managed to definitively pinpoint the date and the time almost all of them were shown.
I have taken one or two bits from YouTube, but unless there is a lot of surrounding material to help, they’re harder to give a TX time.
For the ones I have on VHS it’s easy, even if I didn’t have my notes made at the time of recording, I can always use the teletext.
Secondly, while I was in the midst of this, I got sick.
It was nothing serious, but at times like this it gets you thinking and I wondered...... if something did get me and I invested in the proverbial agricultural smallholding, would my collection of Doctor Who clips, continuities etc. be preserved?
I know we’re hardly talking about anything earth-shattering here, but I’ve been recording Doctor Who bits for many years now, ever since we first got a VCR in ’83 and I wouldn’t like to see it all just binned.
I have explained to my family that I’d like it preserved if I croaked, but after a bit of a family feud, I realised I didn’t trust that would happen.
Though everything is backed up, nobody else has copies. I have done a wee bit of trading, but very limited.
This isn’t through any aversion to sharing what I have, just my solitary, Asperger’s ways.
It’s far easier to deal with videos and lists than with people!
In recent years, the archaeology of this has become my hobby. Getting the absolute best playback I can from old tape, getting an accurate TX time, finding buried audio continuity on the linear audio track, rebuilding or repairing trails...... it’s how I idle away my time.
I’ve become a repository for old VHS tapes among my family and friends, and recent a discovery from these meant I was able to complete a trail I previously only had incomplete, and I got far too excited when I was able to improve the audio quality for one of my Who continuities!
I think this kind of thing should be shared as widely as possible so that it’s safer, but obviously I’m a collector and want to expand my collection too.
So I’m tentatively asking to see if anyone has any desire to share BBC Doctor Who trails, continuities, etc, etc in some form. Original TX, repeats, anything.
It all adds to the sum of knowledge.
I’m doing BBCtv (and possibly UK Gold) only for now.
I know that the rules of the forum state: ‘DO NOT REQUEST OR DISCUSS TRADES OF COPYRIGHT MATERIAL.’, and of course I wouldn’t share anything that has had, or is likely to have, any kind of commercial release. My aim is to collect and make available as much information as I can, and to safeguard my collection by sharing it and maybe even to add to it a little bit. I don’t want to upset anyone, so if my post breaks the rules, I’m very sorry and please delete.
I’m a collector, but no hoarder. Ed Stradling at the TV Museum has my details, and I keep any non-Who continuity I find for the Museum. I am happy to share anything I have recorded for all to see.
I’m not really interested in posting to YouTube myself. I sometimes use it as a source, or for research, but the quality is mostly terrible and I do so loathe de-interlacing!!
Anyway, that’s about it. I hope I’ve explained myself relatively well. Communication with people isn’t my strongest point!
As an example of my info, I’ve included a list for November 1993 below.
It’s certain there were more broadcasts of the various trails, but this list only includes the ones where my copy allows me to pin it down to a TX time.
Undated recordings are filed separately. All the best
