Discussing old SF stuff (radio, JIS in particular) with an old uni mate (of 50 yrs ago now !) he mentioned remembering a serial, radio, 1960s he thought, about 'critters' invading Earth from Europa.
I have no memory of anything like that, only JIS in '58 and Orbiter-X in '60.
He said he'd looked for it, couldn't find it and so reckoned it wasn't on BBC, which makes me wonder what station it could have been - R.Luxembourg ? - my memory of R.Lux in the '60s was that it was all pop music ... no drama.
I can't say I remember anything like it on TV either (except we only had BBC, we didn't get ITV until '66, so ...)
Anyone got any ideas what it could have been ?

Never repeated (up to end of Genome) I was told the Beeb no longer have it, although I have no way of verifying that but someone here might know for sure. There were 13 episodes in total, of which only episodes 1,2,3 & 10 circulate among collectors.

The Beeb only has Charles Chilton's 'Space Force' series due to listeners taping off-air.
Sadly Chilton's 'Riders of the Range' are lost forever (only a 5 min clip exists).
It may be that Keith Wickham knows something about 'Shadow on the Sun.'
BTW there's a report that archive material has been lost from the BBC Archives - a search for Bert Jansch recordings for a forthcoming 6 x CD box set has found that at least one documented master tape is physically missing.
And there's another report of a generous donation of important reel-reel / digitised recordings that was made to the BBC Archives for which no thanks was ever given nor received. The person has now reportedly decided to donate further tapes to Kaleidoscope instead, on the principle that they would look after the tapes better than the BBC Archives themselves.

More info here - and why we may never hear the series again ... alt.movies.kubrick.narkive.com/wkh1BItq/shadow-on-the-sun== The original audio tapes of the SF drama are unlikely to have survived, as both video and audio tape was so expensive at the time that numerous dramas were routinely wiped for later re-use/recording of subsequent dramas. However, Kubrick may well have recorded it off the radio on his own equipment back in 1961, as how else would he, twenty seven years later in 1988, have recalled such details about the broadcast? ====

www2.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/lists/unmade-kubrick-10-essential-filmsShadow on the Sun (1988-94) In 1988, Kubrick purchased the rights to a 13-part BBC radio play called Shadow on the Sun. Incredibly, Kubrick had last heard the sci-fi serial, about an invasion by lizard-like aliens who block out the sun and infect Earth with a virus that sends mankind into a frenzy, back in 1961, while he was in London working on Lolita. For years Kubrick tinkered with Gavin Blakeney’s radio plays, adding notes (“A Bill Murray line!”), but when Kubrick committed to Eyes Wide Shut the project was dropped. ====

I think the 'tell' to that is that it's never turned up on R7/R4Ex, and given the number of times things like JIS, Earthsearch and Orbiter-X have it's fairly clear it can't survive complete in the Beeb's archives.

Recordings likely do not exist in the BBC Archives because not a lot does from the 1950s. Kubrick may have made his own off-air recordings. But these have not surfaced. Kubrick also bought the rights to the series to make a major feature film of the story; which he then abandoned. And apparently the Kubrick archives do not list the scripts in his estate papers. Where are they? If the scripts exist then there's a chance to re-create the series; but who owns the rights? ====

They're not alone, no official organisation apart from Kal wants to take in audio. I returned high quality audio tracks from television only then because I insisted and happened to reach the right person. Sadly, the upshot is that an unknown number of times, people will have offered stuff only to meet refusal and then thrown it away.
