I have read that a film exists of John Lennon getting an erection which was filmed by Yoko. Is this true? Where can someone obtain a copy? Thanks for any help with this.

'Self Portrait', it was called. - made around 1969. Lots of Beatles biographers mention it, but none appear to have seen it. I have my doubts about whether it ever existed.

John and Yoko made loads of short films, actually, but they never seem to get bootlegged or made available officially. This has always struck me as odd, considering how legendary some of them are. Anyone know why?

Thanks for the info, seems an odd thing to have filmed in the first place, I just want it to go with my Beatles collection as a certain oddity. Looks like I have more searching to do.

I would imagine they'd have limited appeal if released on DVD (I'd buy it though !) and Yoko does tend to trickle stuff out very slowly. The 3 avant garde albums took years to be re-issued, and I'm sure sales of those were pretty limited. Weren't some of them shown a few years ago at one of Yoko's art exhibitions ?

Yes, her Greatest Hits exhibition in 1999 had screenings of 'Bottoms', 'Fly', 'Rape' and a couple of lesser-know ones. I did ask the curators if they knew how to get hold of them, but they didn't have a clue. There was a 'Wish Tree' in the foyer, where you could write messages on leaves and pin them to the branches. You were supposed to put stuff like 'Please let there be peace' or whatever, but I just wrote on about 20 leaves 'Please release your Bottoms on DVD'.
They'd have limited appeal, yes, but presumably all the Beatles completists would buy them, just for curiosity' sake. I was amazed it took so long for Two Virgins, Life With The Lions et al to come on CD.

This movie must be even more boring than the initial thought of Lennon filming his erection! Apparently, high speed film was used and then slowed down, making the total duration 42 minutes of imperceptible movement.

I've seen VHS bootlegs at Trans-Penine record fairs of John and Yoko's films, so they are bootlegged. Some of them, at least.

Oh, and the ICA screened self-Portrait in September 1969, so it does exist.

Well that now confirms that it certainly exists, but where would the film be now and how would anyone get hold of a copy? Has anyone actually seen "self portrait"?

Who is the ICA? Would they still have a copy?

The films will surely be in Yoko's own extensive archive.
