Cause those 2 episodes (Episodes 4 and 5), along with some episodes of The Aztecs and The Sensorites, were stored in a vault in northern Nicosia, which was unfortunately destroyed in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The only reason the other episodes survived because they were in the main CyBC buildings in Southern Cyprus, where they escaped being touched by the Turks, since Turkey only focused on Northern Cyprus. This is incorrect. The building housing the Cyprus historical film archive, in which were several DW episodes was destroyed in the attempted coup that preceded the Turkish invasion. Did literally nothing get saved? I notice there is a new film archive now (https://www.limassol.org.cy/en/istoriko-arxeio-kentro-meleton) Richard

That was the year before a fire at the Old Market Hall where the library was housed destroyed 160,000 books in the facility’s collection. At the time of the fire, nearly a third of the library’s books were checked out, Larson discovered. That made Famous Composers one of the lucky pieces of literature to survive the blaze." www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/nov/18/100-year-overdue-library-book-st-paul-minnesota

Add to my post above the hundreds (?) of books from the library that were in private hands because they'd been swiped.
We know that it wasn't unknow for DW episodes to survive, too because they weren't where they shoulda been.

I'd be more interested if the country that phoned in the early 1990s, and which was told their copies were not wanted, really destroyed them or just left them somewhere under the stairs/propping up a table/for test film.
But that sounds like one of the things that PM would check.

If the archive was looted before being destroyed (I wonder what they were after), then perhaps the Doctor Who episodes are in Turkey now, or in Northern Cyprus (BRT seems to be the northern Cyprus TV station).

Angel, as I remember it, the story was that Mugabe allegedly filched a number of DW episodes for his own private viewing. This story has been debunked, but the "reference" still survives in the consciousness of long-term board members like John and myself, but may mystify others.

BRT is indeed the Turkish language tv station serving the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" Its based in Nicosia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayrak

It goes back to the days of the sadly missed RT MB when there was a thread about MEs in Zimbabwe which one of the tabloids picked up and ran as Mggable allegedly “hoarding” DW “tapes”.

OK. I am going to lock this thread and then later, when you've all read this message I'm going to delete it.
