Currently I am watching Monty Python repeats on Belgian TV; it's quite possible their tapes aren't new. I can still see the BBC logo, which I believe was cut when the episodes became property of python pictures ltd. but I could eb wrong. So I was wondering: what bits should I watch to see if they are there or not?
So far I know of *part political choreographer (episode 38) *'masturbating' in summarise Proust competition (episode 31) *satan animation (episode 24)
Anything else I should keep an eye on, just in case?

The funeral sketch in which Cleese or Chapman has his dead mom in a sack and they suggest eating her.
I noticed on a 90's reun it was in poor shape visually, suggesting that after the ban it was wiped and later recovered from overseas.

If so, I'd better keep recording these repeats. In any case, it's not as if they're cutting anything to press the episodes in a tight timeslot. Yesterday's repeat ran for about 33'.

A dvd release will not happen anytime soon so I'd recommend it, yes.

The complete series is available on dvd in the US though.
The funeral sketch does look as if its been sourced ntsc in any version I've ever seen. Python have full control of the editing done to the tv series - so I guess it depends on what versions they want out.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that the original series 3 opening titles no longer exist, and the current ones are different? Is there any truth to this or wasmy leg being pulled? If it is true, then what is the story?

The site "Some Of the Corpses Are Amusing" has about 12 pages of information on missing/edited out sketches/lines. So there's more than just a few to be sure, boyo. Yes indeed.

Episodes 24 and 38 are the real problems. While bits have gone missing in several episodes over the years, those bits do exist and it's only a matter of making sure "proper" versions are released (i.e., the uncut vs. cut Proust Competition).
Some changes were made on audio, either for music clearance reasons (redubbing the Pepperpots to hum "I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown hair" instead of "Girl from Ipanema" in the Penguin on the Television sketch), taste ("gangrene" for "cancer"), or for some God-only-knows reason (replacing audio of a man panting over lovely bikini-clad girls with "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody"). But these audio bits exist.
The trick is video that has been cut, and for Ep. 24 ("Conquistidor Instant Coffee" and "Satan Animation") only black-and-white kinescope has turned up so far. For the "Choreographed Conservative Party Speech" sketch that originally opened Ep. 38, the only copy I've come across so far is an off-air that has a PBS pledge drive phone number burned on-screen.
I've been checking various PBS stations and archives in the U.S. and Canada, so far to no avail (though the Library of Congress has a 2-inch tape of the Biggles episode in their underground vault), so if the Belgians of all people broadcast an uncut tape -- I'd really doubt it, but who knows? -- then we have to get a copy and marry it with the original audio. Keep your eyes open, please!

Remarry to the original audio? The Flemish TV uses subtitles, not dubbing, so we'd have the same problem, only in a less irritating spot.
Anyway, this is all just speculation but it hasn't been shown for years and years. With six episodes a week we should get there pretty quick so I'll let you know if anyting turns up. The absence of "copyright python (monty ) pictures ltd." is the only indication I have to assume they are old copies. Will watch 24 and 31 and 38 in any case.
The satan animation could be re-coloured using either the animation samples or the bits from the end of the show (=repeat in 30 seconds), in theory. In a strange twist of events the satan animation has even been uploaded to that youtube site. I wonder who did that.
By the way: I know of a black & white 8mm kinescope of episode 25 - anything missing there?
