Wouldn't have worked as there's lots of those missing too. The old Trooping the Colour thing was just an ancient fan myth with no basis in truth. That myth, whatever it is, is a new one on me (despite my being ancient)! I note the 1952 Trooping the Colour is on iPlayer at the mo - I think it may qualify as the earliest telerecording I've seen. Tried to Google it,but no soap,so I'd say it's the notion that the BBC would be more inclined to retain an archive of an Establishment, repetitive ceremony, such as the Queen's Trooping the Colour, than ensure that they have a full run of Doctor Who. I still like the idea of a cultural activist hiding DW recordings in cans labelled as containing something of little general interest,so that they don't get junked!

I've heard the dreaded cry 'but they kept all the Boat Races' before!

That is indeed it. Many years ago, someone stated with very great authority that it was disgraceful how the BBC had thrown away so many Doctor Who's but the archive had kept every single Trooping the Colour ceremony that no one wanted to see. As so often happens with these sort of comments, there wasn't any actual truth to it, but it got repeated and re-repeated so people accepted it as being an actual fact. It still pops up every now and again.

The inevitable question “what’s the survival rate for Trouping the Colour then?”
