Lost film? Can I just say that it's probably a hoax?

"...it’s highly doubtful that the Beeb — one of the most well funded broadcasters with a vast archives —would “lose” one of their shows." Ah, the belief in intelligent design! Even so, it's not at all certain that it IS missing. It's not covered by tvbrain. It's not at the BFI, but that doesn't mean the BBC hasn't (or has) got it. We don't know.

The BBC have it; confirmed by email this morning. I assume you mean the program, not Bigfoot. Otherwise it's not always a good idea to post about missing episodes. This may drive the price up and make it harder for responsible parties to buy it.

Wouldn't it be wonderful,if thirty years ago, someone had labelled loads of DW as 'Trooping the Colour' and thus saved it from destruction?

This may drive the price up and make it harder for responsible parties to buy it. Naw, gotta get the word out. If it is a thing worth buying its worth the price. If getting the word out means it gets saved then thats the way it goes. The secrecy of the boomer film collectors and their insanity is really the problem. Sorta done with the lets try and steal stinky plops at the lowest price and possibly over pay for something despite it being worthless making it an ACTUAL problem for the market. As a really desirable 16mm film sorta tops out at $2,500 on ebay (and thats for a print of something that is known about and HIGHLY desirable) I don't really worry too much about the price going up on this or things of its sort. In my experience the rarer things that are "lost" don't have nearly as much value as things people want, that is unless they are actively being searched for like a Doctor Who etc. The lost items really shouldn't be bought by the regular collector anyway (the people without means to release or archive it and who will horde it) if they aren't going to do something with it. Get out of the bubble, dude. That being said, I'm messaging the guy to tell him its not lost. See, it might drive the price down now that we know its not lost.

Don't worry, I already told him.
There's two types of buyers here: 1. The ones that will keep it for themselves - and they're not necessarily that unreasonable... Because, after all, if you've just forked out a lot of money, are you really going to let bbc/bfi/kal borrow it and use it for free? 2. Small ad-hoc groups of people who all donate a fiver, so it can go back to an official archive. You could potentially mess it up for the second group.

The old Trooping the Colour thing was just an ancient fan myth with no basis in truth. That myth, whatever it is, is a new one on me (despite my being ancient)! I note the 1952 Trooping the Colour is on iPlayer at the mo - I think it may qualify as the earliest telerecording I've seen.
