Hope someone can help with this.
Does anyone know the archive status of the 1970 Fairs Cup Final second leg, which was played at Highbury? I'm not sure if the game was televised at all, but clips of one goal do keep cropping up, with Brian Moore commentary, so I assume it was.
The old Arsenal players always mention this as their most memorable Highbury night, so as the stadium will no longer exist soon I am wondering if this does!
Thanks in advance.

Do you mean this one?
Quote
" Arsenal beat Ajax Amsterdam 3-0 London on Wednesday night (8 april 1970) in the first leg of the European fairs cup semi-final.
Arsenal dominated the opening play and Ajax paid heavily for discarding their usual attacking style for more defensive tactics. Arsenal's first score came when teenager Charlie George notched up a goal with a shot from 25 yards out in the fifteenth minute of the first half.
Ajax, European cup finalists last year, were hard put to stop Arsenal scoring again before half time. the second goal came in the 78th minute of play when Jon Sammels put the ball into the net after confused play in the Ajax goal mouth. two minutes later Charlie George scored his second goal from a penalty to put Arsenal 3-0 up at the end of the game.
Arsenal are attempting to become the third English Club to win the Fairs Cup in successive seasons following the successes of Leeds United two years ago and Newcastle United last season". unquote Courtesy of Reuters News Agency their Reference 3157/70" footage is restricted to selling 2 minute sequences only.
This is not say that a TV company might also have the whole match? such as 'The Big Match' with Brian Moore.

Fairs Cup final 2nd leg was 28 April at Highbury. The Big Match on LWT covered it on their programme of 3 May 1970 probably as edited high-lights and this'll be where the Brian Moore commentary will be from.
ITV Sport should have the material and the rights. Good luck in trying to get hold of it!

Presumably the goals from that match would have been included on the Arsenal history DVD?

Thanks for the info. I think only the Sammels goal (the winner) is on the history DVD and it's the same clip that I have seen all over the place recently.
I have a vague recollection of one famous old game only existing as a clip from News at Ten and wondered if this was it. Investigations need to be made....
Thanks again.

Perhaps it's a format issue. Often in TV with time and money so pressing producers just grab an easily available clip without ever going back to the original source. The winning goal may be on some sort of Arsenal compilation held by ITV Sport maybe on one-inch or beta. To get more they'd have to go back to the two inch original (which may be in storage at the NFA or junked)......

The ITV Sport archive is held by ISN and they will sell you VHS copies. Apparently they only hold complete matches so not sure who holds the highlights packages. Anyway a couple of years ago the charge was £90 plus VAT which came in at about £107 which I thought was quite reasonable.
