I heard about this being the earliest attempt at dramatising Tolkien's work. Apparently he wasn't very pleased with it. I was interested in listening to it however I found out that all episodes of it are lost and according to an old Reddit post no scripts survive either. As information regarding the series is scarce, can anybody tell me how likely the survivial of any episodes is as well as the likelihood of any scripts turning up?

It’s not impossible that it was recorded, iirc Bob Monkhouse was recording off air at that time - but it’s extremely unlikely.. If anything does survive these will know www.tolkiensociety.org

This one? genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/f441220ac7294a379a004301e4263405I'd say the chances are negligible. It’s not impossible that it was recorded, iirc Bob Monkhouse was recording off air at that time - but it’s extremely unlikely.. If anything does survive these will know www.tolkiensociety.orgNot necessarily; sometimes these societies see the adaptations as some sort of derivative. All the Sherlock Holmes societies haven't managed to save the lost early TV series. Later on, J.R.R. had his own tape recorder, didn't he have a go at recording something similar himself? I seem to recall something like that from the biography.

The Tolkien Society may not think much of the 1956 version, but they’re probably the best source of information about it.

Even though the audio didn't survive, I would have thought that the scripts would have? Is it normal for radio plays to have missing scripts?

Regardless of what the Tolkein Society thinks/thought, this to me would be fascinating. Too bad even the scripts are gone.

Are the scripts gone? I mean, it's not unlikely, but has it actually been checked? Reddit is hardly the gospel...
We have the 1981 series, which is very good. Would it be any better? Completist as I am, I can't help but wonder if this isn't a case of wanting something BECAUSE we can't have it. No-one would ever care if it weren't Tolkien. A bit like that earliest TV version of Casino Royale: That was recovered many years ago, so Ian Fleming diehards can now watch it, but it won't ever be more than an oddity. Funny my saying this, normally I would be on the other side of the fence. Anyway, the question is unf. moot.

OK, I checked, and... SCRIPTS EXIST FOR THE FIRST 6 EPISODES and possibly for the last 6 as well. Plus correspondence. It makes sense, that "tolkiengateway" page was a bit too detailed; the writers of its primary reference source, "The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide", must have found and read these scripts as well.

I've also contacted the BBC archives and they said that Episode 1 still exists but unfortunately, it's unavailable for public viewing.
