We know there were the following 17 episodes, but were there more than this?
We only know some of those who appeared on 9 of the 17, so can anyone find out who were on the other 8 and were there any more groups, singers as well. We know 1 episode was 20 minutes, was this the same for all?
Wednesday 13/4/66 Unknown Tuesday 16/5/66 10.00 - 10.20 pm Unknown
The 100 list has been updated with this information

Hi William,
I’d never heard of BBC Wales’s “Beat and Ballad” before I looked at this thread. However, I noticed that some of the details you provided regarding guests and transmission dates are identical to those for TWW’s “Now!” series. I was wondering if your notes for these two series got mixed-up somehow?
I had a trawl through the TV listings in “The Times” and a couple of other newspapers. These are the transmission details that I found for “Beat and Ballad”:
Wednesday 13 April 1966 Monday 16 May 1966 Monday 27 June 1966 Saturday 02 July 1966 Wednesday 06 July 1966 Wednesday 13 July 1966 Wednesday 23 July 1966 Monday 12 December 1966
There appear to have been 8 episodes, but I suspect there may have been less than that. A couple of these broadcasts may have been afternoon repeats.
Episodes were either 15 or 20 minutes in length.
I’ve not been able to find any information regarding guests, but “The Times” described the programme as “light entertainment”. It’s difficult to know for sure, but I don’t think it was a pop programme aimed at teenagers.

Hi Mark,
You are absolutely correct, (Thank You for drawing attention to my error.)
When I checked my source it agrees with what you say above, in fact I could only come up with 2 dates for Beat and Ballad, those being
Wednesday 13/4/66 Monday 16/5/66
those other dates I posted above are a continuation of Now! which was also above the 2 entries I list here for Beat and Ballad.
(I have therefore corrected number 88 on the 100 list on page 1 of this thread)
This is what we need, each other checking to confrim that what we think is correct, is actually correct?
These 2 dates above for Beat and Ballad come from tvpopdiaries, so they seem to think it was pop oriented, athough they do not know the content on those 2 show dates.
I guess we need someone on the forum who actually lives in Wales, like cjones who I believe said he lives near Wrexham, to possibly look into this via local newspapers for those dates above, to see if they list pop acts, with a name like Beat and Ballad, it tends to make us think it was a pop music show...

I imagine that the songs performed in that episode related to Christmas and the New Year.

Kev do you have any more details about this show/series? or indeed anyone else please? The more we know, the more entertaining it is to read about...

William!
Here's a quote from 60's city.
A 1967 series from Ulster TV called 'Zoom In', conceived by Gordon Burns of 'Krypton Factor' fame, was originally planned to be just two 'filler' shows called 'Zoom In' and 'Zoom Out' but was sufficiently successful to be given a run in the 7.00pm prime time slot. Co-produced by Tony Eames, it featured both Irish showbands and visiting English artists with two regular go-go dancers and the studio audience. The show also contained comedy sketches featuring DJ Hendi (Michael Henderson).
and from Wikipedia
Michael "Hendi" Henderson is a Northern Irish broadcaster, best known for his voiceover work on UTV and a weekly radio programme on Belfast-based radio station U105.
Henderson began his broadcasting career in the mid-1960s, working for the BBC Northern Ireland Home Service on various programmes, mainly as a presenter on a programme called Soundings. He became a well-known figure on the local club and disco scene, as well as a guest presenter for many BBC Radio 1 roadshows in Northern Ireland. In 1968, he made his television debut, starring in an Ulster Television music series called Zoom In, produced by Gordon Burns (later presenter of The Krypton Factor) and Tony Eames.

Gordon Burns said...
About the question "who devised Zoom In on UTV?" Well, er, I did! Brilliant wasn't it? Originally it was just two programmes to fill a couple of spare slots so I called them Zoom In and Zoom Out - pretty slick huh? They were deemed a success so a series followed in a peak 7pm evening slot. I hauled in my old East Antrim Times mate and very good friend Tony Eames to co produce, decided on Zoom In (rather than Out)as the permanent title and it proved to be a success. It was a sort of Top of the Pops style show. We featured Irish showbands like The Freshmen and visiting English groups ( I remember we had the Equals and the Foundations amongst others). There was dancing in the studio with Ulster's young set turning up in their micro mini skirts to shake it about. We only wanted the good-lookers near the cameras so we designated a "grot corner" to where Tony and I, watching on a monitor from an office, directed the floor manager via his headset to despatch all ugly women! (Would never be allowed to today!!). The programme also featured funny sketches written by Tony and me and starring DJ Hendi (Michael Henderson). It was the best fun in the world and ran for two series. Oh yes, and we also had two regular go-go dancers who did a slot each week - usually terrible but they had VERY short skirts and we shot it from VERY low angles. I have pics somewhere! Those were days of pioneering TV huh?

Here’s some information about Zoom In.
There were 20 episodes altogether.
The two pilot episodes were shown on Wednesday 16 Oct 1968 and Wednesday 23 Oct 1968.
Series 1 ran each Thursday from 9 January 1969 to 03 April 1969. The time slot was 6.00-6.30 p.m.
Series 2 ran each Thursday from 24 April 1969 to 05 June 1969. The time slot was 7.00-7.30 p.m.
I haven’t been able to find many details regarding guests.
Helen Shapiro performed “Today Has Been Cancelled” on 26 March 1969.
I think The Group may have been the resident band on the series. They were from Belfast and they were influenced by the Beach Boys.

This is a great idea for a thread. I looked through the list and I noticed two programmes which might not be missing. The first one is “Liverpool A Go-Go”. A documentary film of this name was made in 1965 for ABC TV in the USA. I suspect that this is what Grampian broadcast on 05 August 1966. If I’m correct, then this was the only time this film was shown on British TV. The documentary was presented by Cavern DJ Bob Wooler and featured several Liverpool groups including the Fourmost, the Spinners, the Hideaways and the Clayton Squares. It’s available to view on the BFI Player and YouTube. The second programme is “Melanie”. This was a 30-minute documentary shown in the Granada region only on 05 August 1969 (it was repeated on 16 September 1969.) This programme exists and I watched it on YouTube a few months ago. However, Melanie Safka also appeared in another British programme called “Melanie”. This was a 10-minute programme broadcast on BBC-2 on 8 May 1971. This programme is missing. UPDATE: Hi Mark, Many thanks for this update...I have taken Melanie and Liverpool a Go Go off the list. So the list is now down to 99.
