A childhood memory I have had since the mid 70's is of a Jackanory Playhouse with a "robot" in the court of a King and Queen of Hearts type characters.
Nobody I have ever mentioned this to could ever recall it. I knew it had existed and wasn't a childhood dream as I remember watching it get repeated about a year after I first saw it and being really pleased to see it a second time.
In the recent Jackanory Evening on BBC4 I saw what I think was a few seconds clip of the robot when the documentary mentioned the Playhouses.
There is very little reference to Jackanory Playhouse on the internet whatsoever, basically saying there was 6 episodes of 30 min duration made in 1972. The documentary however stated the series ran from the 70's to the 80's.
Does anyone else recall this specific episode and its availability in the archives?

I remember that episode distinctly although I've absolutely no idea of its name. Wasn't Derek Griffiths involved somewhere in this?
I do remember the first episode of Johnny Briggs was a Jackanory Playhouse, as was Lizzy Dripping with that girl who ended up being a presenter on Blue Peter.

Interesting you say that Ant, as one of the very few pieces of info I have found about on the net re. Jackanory Playhouse is that Derek Griffiths was in an episode, and from what you say it would appear it was this "robot" episode.
I am sure I have also read that Joan Sims was in an episode and I wonder if it was this one as I can just imagine her being cast as the "Queen of Hearts" type character.

This is probably "The Queen and the Robot", a "Jackanory Playhouse" shown 9/1/75. Cast included Pat Coombs, Anna Quayle, Hugh Lloyd. The programme exists complete in the BBC archive.

Andrew, thank you, this is great.
It makes total sense that the cast included Anna Quayle as she was the Baroness in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
And if she was the Queen in this programme she was probably cast with that role in mind!
I wonder if Huw Lloyd was the King? And as for dear old Pat Coombs being in it, fantastic!

I have vague memories of another episode of Jackanory Playhouse that I think was one of the original six broadcast in 1972 and I wonder if one of you nice people would be able to tell me if I'm remembering correctly? I've looked on the net and haven't been able to find out anything about it.
It was something to do with a monkey and his friends going on some sort of quest and stealing something from the Snow Queen?
Can anyone tell me who was in it and if it exists in the archives?
Thanks,
Chuffer

Its a bitch when you simply dont know if it officially exists or not, isnt it? Seems to apply a lot with the less documented stuff. My own personal bugbear is 'they came from somewhere else'..... does that officially exist or not? Probably does, but I havent a clue tbh.

I notice Vivian Stanshall is listed as narrator.
Which probably means that, if this item still exists it will be in the hands of one of his fans...just an idea should anyone feel keen to pursue this.

Hi,
As a great fan of James Beck (Private Walker - Dad's Army) I am interested to know if the Jackanory episode(s) Humbert, Mr Firkin, and the Lord Mayor of London/The Golden Horse (1970) listed on the imdb website, still exist and if so, would anyone be able to point me in the right direction to obtain a copy?
Thanks in advance
Peter

If I recall the details correctly, this was edited for repeat showing, and this edited version is the one which still exists.
